My heart and prayers go out to Staff Sgt. Mike Fuga and his family.May god speed him on his jurney. And may he hold his family and loved ones in the palm of his hand to comfort and to console them for the trials that lay ahead.

Everytime I read one of these my heart sinks to think that the price of freedom is so high. But I am also proud to know that we have Amercian service members ready to give that last full measure.

All gave some, But some gave all. These are the true heros in my book always have been and allways will be.

Lest I keep my complacent way, I must remember that somewhere out there a person died for me today. As long as there must be war, I ask and I must answer: Was I worth dying for?

A soldier from Independence died over the weekend when he was hit with small-arms fire in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael T. Fuga, 47, was killed Saturday in the southern city of Kandahar. He was assigned to the Missouri National Guard's 35th Special Troops Battalion, based in St. Joseph.

His wife, Justina Fuga, 35, said her husband was in Kandahar training Afghan armed forces, and had been scheduled to return home in February.

Fuga grew up in Nuuli, American Samoa, and joined the military just three months after he finished high school, his wife said. He worked for many years as a stocker for Southwest Airlines and played on Fort Riley's cricket team.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 12-year-old daughter, Salome.

"He was the best dad any little girl could ever ask for," Justina Fuga said. "To me he was one of a kind. It's as if when Mike talked, everybody listened."

She said her husband was planning to retire within the next three years after 20 years of military service. The family was notified of his death Saturday, and his wife said he would be awarded a Purple Heart posthumously.

The family plans a burial at Fort Leavenworth on Sept. 28.
