Hello everyone,
Thank you for your support. We have made the arrangements for the services and the interment. Services at Hillside Chapel followed by a procession with motorcycle honor guard to Willamette National Cemetery for full military honors. Dress casually - my Dad wasn't a suit guy. My brothers and I will be wearing 'Rolling Thunder' POW-MIA T-shirts that Dad bought for us.
The memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at:
Hillside Chapel
1306 Seventh Street
Oregon City, OR 97045
Please do not send flowers. Donations in his honor may be sent to:
Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America
3700 Silverton Rd. NE Salem, OR 97305
My co-worker's father just died and I am passing this along as a request for assistance from his family. The deceased is Jerry Ryan, who was an Airman Second Class in the USAF. His funeral is this Wednesday and will be full honors. His son, Patrick, has requested as many people as possible for an honor guard.
I am forwarding the request from Patrick and hope that PGR can get some folks together. Unfortunately, I am out of town all next week so I cannot gather my usual crowd, but I felt that you would want to know about this. Again the family has specifically requested a motorcycle honor guard.
Thanks for whatever you can do. I don't know who else to turn to.
Ken Ray
In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. ~Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935
Hi Ken,
I really appreciate your help on this. My dad would have been so happy to have a motorcycle escort. Attached are the documents that you requested, if you need anything else call me. Thank you very much and I will see you Monday. J

MISSION UPDATE:
Airman Ryan's son, Patrick, will be carrying his father's ashes to WNC on his Harley, and we will incorporate that in a "Missing-Man" formation, with Patrick and the urn in the missing-man slot.
I'm not sure what time the services at the funeral home will conclude, but we will roll out very shortly after it does.
Again, the basic details are:
Rally @ Latus: 1100 Depart to F.H. in Oregon City: 1200 Services begin: 1300
Still waiting for definitive info on shelter & time at WNC.
Thanks so much (again)

Gonna make this ride. Will be meeting at Coburg Truck Stop (normal rally point for Eugene/Springfield riders) and KSU at 0815. This gives plenty of time to make it to Latus with a stop at Santiam to meet other riders there.

Jerry Ryan happens to be my next door neighbor. In fact, we shared the same long driveway. I've done numerous PGR rides... never would have guessed I'd be doing it so soon for a neighbor. He and his wife had their 50th anniversary in July (they were married very young). Glad they had that together before his passing. No one knew of his illness then, as far as I know.
Jerry, thanks for your service in Vietnam. You'll be missed around here...

Airman Ryan, Fly higher now than you ever imagined. Soar where eagles cannot go. May the family and friends you have held so dear for so long, soon understand that peace is a gift from a loving God, who watches carefully over us all.
God bless you and go before you.

Mission Complete
There were three of us leaving the rest ares this morning. But there were 33 by the time we left the funeral home! The mission to honor Jerry Ryan was, at first, a little on the tenuous side. It wasn't clear that he would recieve full honors at Willamette National, since the papers needed to proove his active duty ststus, way back when. Luckily, a family member was able to call in a favor from a local Senator, and things went much smoother after that.
Jerry's family was so happy to see the bikes roll into the funeral home's parking lot. "Jerry would have loved this!", I heard more than once. One of Jerry's sons, Patrick, even met up with us at Latus, and rode the missing-man slot, not only from Latus Motors to the funeral home, but also up to WNC, carrying his father's ashes. A good last ride.
The Military Honors at WNC were practically flawless. I even got "Present-" and "Order-arms" right this time. Grizz handed me a small brass& enamel pin to give to Jery's wife. She appeared to really appreciate the gesture a lot. Thanks, Grizz.
Grizz was also the point-man for both legs of the ride. Sadly, the happenings at the home took a little too long, so the extended ride we wanted for Jerry had to be shortened. WNC is pretty rigid about the service times that they set up, so keep that in mind.
I have to thank the family for inviting us to help celebrate Jery's life, and to escort him on his Last Ride. The honor was ours. Thank you so very much.
Thank you all for being there, to show support to the family, and to honor Jerry's service to our country. God bless you all.
