"Greetings Patriot,

On Tuesday, 12 Sept, 2006, at 10A.M., the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is unveiling and dedicating a Purple Heart Monument at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville, Al.

The 1.5 ton monument will be dedicated to all Combat Wounded Veterans.  It commemorates and honors all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in any branch of the Armed Forces.

The event will make Huntsville and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center a part of the Purple Heart Trail which begins in George Washington's hometown Mount Vernon, VA.  George Washington was the founder of the Purple Heart in 1782.  The symbolic trail traverses the U.S. to California.  Over 21 states have implemented the trail as well as Puerto Rico and Guam.

We would appreciate the pleasure of your attendance."

And is signed by Oscar Draper, Purple Heart Commander.

Sheila,
You're going to come up 65 and take AL-20 / I-565 East (think it's exit 340).  Click for Map

In about 14 miles, you're going to take exit 14 (Rideout Road / Research Park Blvd / AL-255) North.  Click for Map

About 2.5 miles, take University Drive East (first of two exits).  Click for Map

Head East for about 1.3 miles. Hooters is on your right (South side of University).
It is just past Wynn Drive & beside Chick-Fil-A.
Click for Map

Live in the area.  Anyone that heads this way and needs help, yell.
My bike's still in the shop getting an estimate on the damage so I'm caging it.
Have truck/trailer if, God forbid, anyone needs it.
256-658-3434 is my mobile number and always with me.

I have just found out this morning that I will not be able to attend this dedication. I have a plane that is going to have to have a 100 Hr inspection on it starting in the morning, so duty calls. Y'all have a great time and be sure to tell me all about it. I will be in Harpersville this coming Sunday though.

Last night, news channels had the rain holding off until around noon. Looks like they missed it again.
Radar shows to have heavy precip on the way into our area now, and looks like it will be steady for 4 hours at least.
Methinks we will need our Rain Suits.
If Highsalute can drive down from Maine for the Mission, then I don't think a little wet should stop us.
However, if Lightning does come with the rain, Safety First. If nothing else, lets show up in cages.
any thoughts?

Mission Complete, Final report.
Sorry to be so late posting this,
Considering the Weather, it was good to see 8 Bikes Show up and 3 cagers for this Workday Special Mission. While we braved the elements, The Dedication Ceremony Itself had been moved to an inside venue upon our arrival, so we were able to dry out during the events.
It was an honor to be among recipients of the Purple Heart from WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Gulf War.
Apparently this is one of two such monuments in the entire state. Our Local MIG Pillsbury made a special effort to come where the Pgr was sitting and thanked us for doing what we do. The Space and Rocket Center had marked off a special area right by the Memorial for us to park. After the Ceremony, Refreshments were served, and unfortunately I had to leave for work without having a chance to talk to any of the soldiers who were there as recipients.
But for me, my Fellow PGR members did a fine job of showing Honor and Respect to those living among us who so richly deserve it.
