Below is the official North Carolina National Guard Press Release. The mission is still "Pending". I will notify asap when the status changes.

August 30, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
N.C. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER DIES OF APPARENT NATURAL CAUSES IN KUWAIT SUNDAY

RALEIGH – A North Carolina Army National Guard soldier died of apparent natural causes on Sunday, Aug. 27, at Camp Virginia, Kuwait. The matter is under investigation.

Sgt. Darry Benson, 46, of Winterville, N.C., died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with Headquarters, Headquarters Detachment, 730th Quartermasters Battalion, based in Ahoskie, N.C. He was pronounced dead at the Troop Medical Clinic at Camp Virginia Sunday morning after fellow soldiers reported that he was non-responsive.

"Sgt. Benson's numerous contributions to the NC National Guard will be best remembered by those soldiers that worked long hours with him side by side. He answered when duty called and he will be missed by all of us in the NC National Guard. My deepest condolences go to his family and those that were closest to him.",” said Maj. Gen. William E. Ingram, Jr., Adjutant General of the North Carolina National Guard.

"Sgt. Darry Benson was an outstanding Soldier; he served his country and his state of North Carolina with honor,” said Lt. Col. George F. Robinson, III, Commander, 730th Quartermaster Battalion. “He believed in his country, a patriot. He was a true gentlemen and a good friend to all the soldiers in the 730th.”

“We the family of Darry Benson would like to thank everyone for their support during this time of our grieving. He was a very humble and lovable person and all who met him new they could trust him. He will be truly missed, he was our best friend.” (Benson family statement)

Sgt. Benson was a 15-year military veteran with 4 years in the North Carolina Army National Guard starting in 2002. His awards and decorations include five Army Achievement Medals, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. This was Sgt. Benson’s second deployment in support of the Global War on Terror. He previously deployed to Iraq with A Company, 230th Support Battalion, 30th Brigade Combat Team in 2004 as Heavy Equipment Transport truck driver.

The nearly 60 Soldiers of Sgt. Benson’s unit were mobilized in late April. The unit’s primary mission is to provide command and control for base operations at Camp Virginia, located in northern Kuwait.

For the family of Sgt. Darry Benson:

I can only imagine what you and your family have gone through since being notified of the death of Darry. I want you to know that you are not alone.  Hearts of families all over the United States are grieving with you and have your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

LIFE...so fragile.    LOSS... so sudden.    HEART...so broken.

In time, there will come a day when the tears of sorrow

will softly flow into sighs of remembrance. Your heart will begin to heal itself.
Grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy; & you will hear the whisper of hope.
There will come a day when you will welcome the pangs of remembrance

as a sun shower of the soul; a turning of the tide; the promise of peace.
There will come a day when you will risk loving,

go on believing, and treasure the remembering.

Darry was a very good and brave man. You have much to be proud of. He has not left you, but has been re-deployed to Heaven. I wish that I could ease your pain and sadness, but it will be a long, slow and painful climb.  Pain this deep will never go entirely away, but I pray that as each day that passes the hurt becomes a little less. And the memories of a lifetime will sustain you. These memories are your keepsake that can never be taken away.  God has Darry in his keeping, but you have him forever in your thoughts and hearts. We pray that our Savior – in whose presence Darry now rests – will comfort you and ease the pain of this loss and that your memories of him will shine through the sadness.
