It is sad to see a fallen hero’s family grieve however it takes a little more out of you when you know the person. This is a tough loss for all of us. My heart goes out to all of Dick's family and friends which it is our honor to be associated with. Another sad day to remember and a loss that will not be forgot. Rest in Peace Thingy, your mission is over, ride to your reward, you earned it.

If you ever want a great example of what the Korean War was like read “Colder than Hell” by Joseph R. Owen. To the Powell family, a hero is going home. I’m glad I got to know Thingy for just a short time. He was such a fine example of the PGR. I will miss him.

As I sit here with tears in my eyes and pain in my heart I offer my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to the Powell family. I will regretably be unable to attend this mission while I care for DocTaz but my heart will be there. If there is anything at all that I can do please let me know.

Dick, I know you are in good company and will have many stories to share with them. Tell my husband I love him and miss him and please know that you will be missed here on earth as well.

My sincere condolences to the Powell family. Thingy was a brother ALR and PGR rider and my heart goes out to his wife. This is a tough one. We had so much in common. I was even invited to the same run he was coming home from. This is a painful job we do, but Thingys death is the toughest to handle mentally. Heaven got a true hero and I know he will be respected, honored and appreciated. Ride with the Angels in Peace now my brother.

Dick You have met your "Rendezous with Destiny".

Dick "Thingy" Powell , My Warrior Brother, Dick I only knew you one day of your Gloriuos life . I knew when I met you , you were a man of Courage and Honor. A true Patriot and a warrior to be recognized, honored and respected. Dick you fought your war and served your country long before I even arrived on the scene. Men like you inspired in young boys like me the patriotism and honor of being an American. Men like you Dick and my Father ,are the men who instilled in us the young warriors of Vietnam the courage ,integrety ,honor of country and fellow man to step up and go and suffer and endure and sacrifice for a people we had never known. The courage to fight for the opportunity for another mans right to be free, For a whole nation and race of people to be free. Just as you had done in your war. Yes you and I and all of our brothers were not allowed to accomplish that goal, but by God we stood up and were counted and gave our hearts and souls to that Mission that Destiny had called us to.

Dick you did just that once again when you and your Brothers jumped on your bikes and rode all the way to San Mateo this past weekend to support and honor your younger Brothers of A-Co "ABU" 1st 327th Infantry Regiment ,101st Airborne. Men you had not fought with, but surely had supported while we were there in the "NAM".

Dick, you honored me and all my Brothers by being there with us on Sunday. We were so honored and in awe of you and your brother riders for coming so far to support total strangers in our hour of Honor by our adopted City of San Mateo.I hope you and your Brother Riders realized that you were brought into and welcomed to, and on Sunday came to be a member of our Band of Brothers! You will always be Honored and Remembered by all "ABU" Brothers Dick!

People ask why we go to reunions, join organizations such as ALRAZ. Dick I tell them we do these things ,
Not to tell stories or look at pictures. Not to laugh or weep.
Brother Warriors gather because they long to be with men who once acted their best.....Men who suffered and scaraficed....Men who were stripped raw..Right down to their Humanity.
They yearn to be in the presence of Honorable Men !
Dick you are in such a place now. You have gone honorably to be with your honorable Bros. Dick you are now with the most Honorable Man to have ever walked this earth.
You are with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Rest in peace and honor and know that we honor you ,and we will all join you on that long Patrol you are on one day Dick. We will all walk that trail together one day soon.

Dick we send our love and wrap Linda and your family in that love in their hour of loss and need . We do this out of our love and Honor for You Our "Brother Warrior" ,Love You Man !

Ever since I joined ALRAZ, where I met Dick"Thingy" Powell, we built a very close friendship. He and the other ALRAZ and PGR brothers, after riding out to San Mateo, were recognized as ABU Brothers by the City of San Mateo.I know Dick was doing what he loved to do...ride.I know he's being accepted into God's hands with his new Fallen ABU Brother, Joe Artavia. It's difficult to express feelings in words that I have toward Dick and his wife Linda.I will never forget Dick as long as I live.
Dick, if you can hear my words, I will never forget your laughter, jokes and beaming smile that you left me with in San Mateo and touched my face to tell ME I would be okay. .I'll be honored to lead you to your resting place carrying the Airborne Flag in your honor and memory.

My condolences to the Powell family, he will be missed by many.  For any Phx westside riders I will be leaving for Tucson about 0600 hours Wed.  Little less than 2 hour drive, right at 2 if we stop and with form up at 0830 that should be about right.  Being rush hour it may be a little longer.  The old standby at Dysart works for me.
