Thank you to the members that were able to make this mission a success. It was crisp and sunny day- a perfect day to pay tribute to a veteran. It was a small ceremony, with no military in attendance. The PGR members stood behind and to the left of the family and friends present to pay their respects. I spoke briefly with Mrs. Shuman and offered our condolences and our services if needed. I also thanked her for the honor of allowing us to be present to honor an American hero and veteran. Near the end of the ceremony, the Reverend made mention of us, referring to us as a group that was present to honor Mr. Shuman’s military service. At the end of the service when the American flag was presented to Mrs. Shuman by the Reverend, the PGR members stood at attention to pay their final tribute.
After the conclusion, several people thanked us for our attendance. One of them stated that she had heard of the PGR and thought that what we (the entire PGR membership) did was a wonderful thing. As we were heading to the vehicles, a man standing near by also commented on us being there and asked about the organization. One of the members explained PGR to the man and gave him the web site address. (This is when I wished I had printed off one of Christine’s business cards!) As the family and friends were talking after the ceremony, I presented Mrs. Shuman a small flag to put in the ground at his grave to show that a veteran was buried there or to take home. She chose to have it put by his grave.

Now for the behind the scenes info…. I have always respected what the RC and the SC must do to put together a mission. I respect them even more after this! This is hard work! I think I covered all the bases- permission for staging, contact with cemetery officials, and contact with local police. Also, as Christine said and I’ve learned, things never go as planned. I got a call from Todd, the temporary RC, as I was about halfway to staging. He couldn’t make it- change of plans! I think, “That’s OK, I can do this, except I’m not sure how to give the commands! (I’m not military and don’t feel comfortable giving them, anyway.) Hopefully someone shows up and will know the commands.” Luckily, both of the bikers who showed up were veterans and one of them offered to call the commands. [sigh of relief] Now I knew we’d look professional- and we did. (Standing in the sun at the services warmed our Gorham rider up enough for the ride home.)

Thank you again to those who were able to make it to this mission on such short notice. Both the family members and I appreciated it.
