Is anyone riding from the Charlestown WV or Leesburg area? I'm riding from Bunker Hill WV and with the morning traffic so congested, wouldn't mind a little company. Look forward to honoring this great American hero and his dear family. Jim Sandefur III SAC USAF 1963-67 jimsand3rd@juno.com |

| 28 August 2006: 0845 to 1330 hours.
9 bikes, 1 cage = 10 PGR. Nice turn out for somewhat short notice.
Thank you all for attending today for this fine young soldier. Dan - couldn't have done it without you. Thank you so much for scouting out the staging last week, following up with the church this morning, and being our lead man in the procession.
Very smooth transition from staging to the church for the Corridor of Flags, which we held for an hour for the arrival of the family and friends of Spc. Robert E. Drawl, Jr. We were thanked by friends and family for our presence today. During the service that began at 1000 hrs, we had about an hour of down-time which gave us all an opportunity to get acquainted. Some of us have been on missions together before, we welcomed some new faces, and we had 2 newcomers, Leslie and Shawn. Welcome! And I found out that Smoot works around the corner from me! I'll be looking for you Smoot!
We were alerted that the family was ready to exit the church and we held a Line of Flags opposite of the vehicles during the transfer from the church to the hearse. We then had a little more down-time before leaving for Arlington. During this time, we met Gonzalez, a fellow that served with Drawl. He thanked each of us and then spoke with us for a while about various things. I hope that it helped him a little. Then, Spc. Drawl's father-in-law came over and shook each of our hands and thank us. We humbly responded that it was our honor and duty to be there today.
Alexandria Police performed escort for the procession from the church and then Arlington Police picked us up around Quaker Lane. I still am always amazed when they stop traffic on 395. It surely is a sight to see. PGR took up at the end and we had 4 large flags flying from the church to ANC. We were able to position them so the flags were staggered throughout the group - well done all! I took up at the end.
At ANC while we were waiting, we met Jason. He's 3, I believe. And Jason LOVES bikes. He sat on 3 or 4 and tried on just as many helmets. Oh, and gloves - he loved the gloves. Of course we all took pictures (just have to figure out how to get them off of my phone!) and I'll post them up in the morning. His mom, Lacey, thanked us and told me that it was good to have a little light-heartedness. Jason was putting smiles on alot of folks' faces today.
At graveside, we held a simple silent vigil line. After the service, we went back to the bikes and I gave a brief thank you and I gave Leslie and Shawn their first mission pins. While we were preparing to depart, Jason came back to visit. We gave him a PGR pin and a patch - thanks you guys!
We talked with a couple of the family members and we expressed our condolences and they their thanks. We then departed as a group.
Rest in peace, Robert. Your job is done. You won't be forgotten. Welcome home.

Thank you Suzie Q and Dan for an excellent mission. It was my honor to stand tall with all who attended in honoring a true American hero. As Spc Drawls mother was passing through our Corridor of Flags entering the church, I heard her say " BOBBY WILL LOVE THIS..........."
That is why we do what we do.
Spc Drawls, YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN NOR WILL YOU EVER BE. |

The moment that will stand out for me was when we were standing the Corridor of Flags prior to the service. A young guy came out -- high school? Young 20s? He stood there for a second, looking confused. I thought he wasn't sure if he should pass through the flags.
Then he spoke. He thanked us for his brother, Spc. Drawl. It has always been the most emotional time for me -- people take the time from their grief to thank us.
That brief connection of our human bonds and bonding is so important. So very important.

btw, Thanks to Suzie and Co-Captain Dan for your work.
