Vickie, Latus Motors is facing the MacDonalds at exit 11 off of I 205 . ( I think thats the number). It says " Gladstone / DMV " . If you come from the south turn left, cross the bridge to the bottom of a short hill and turn left at the left turn lane. From the north turn right and down the hill. Look for the HUGE American flag at Latus. Ride safe. Chonga ICVMC |

While I had planned to make tomorrow's ride to honor the fallen Marine and his family, I've had an emergency (work related) that's going to put me in Salem tomorrow morning and I don't know yet if I'll be able to make it. However, I will watch the posts and see what section (probably D, again) the service will be at and may dirve up there direct.
My thoughts will be with the family and my brothers and sisters of the PGR.

Mission Complete
We have said goodbye to an American Hero. Lance Corporal Randy Newman was laid to rest with full military honors, as is befitting A Marine of his merits & valor.
I sometimes have difficulty in writing an "after-action" report, and this one is no exception. Riders from all over the area converged on the fairgrounds in Redmond, to witness the memorial service for Randy, and, if neccessary, shield the family from unwanted detractors. Luckily, or perhaps by design, the latter was not needed.
The arena, by all accounts, was packed. I'm told that well over one, maybe two thousand people were in attendance (I didn't see inside, as I was frantically making arrangements for the next day...). After the service, I was introduced to Randy's mother, Ramona, and the rest of his family. She said to thank all the riders that came to honor her son, and that she wished she could give each one a hug of thanks and gratitude. I was happy to relay that message, and assured her that we would be in attendance the next day, at Willamette National Cemetery as well.
I counted 69 motorcycles at the fairgrounds that day, and no doubt there were more lurking where I could not find them. a very respectable turnout. Many clubs and organizations were present, too many to mention & do justice for. But every one of them was a guest of honor for Ramona.
The trip back to Albany felt more like winter than late August. Let's leave it at that...
The following day, wednesday the 30th, was a bit warmer. The ride north, to Latus motors, uneventful. I even kept a reasonable speed this time, I'm told.
The Hearse would arrive about an hour early, but WNC assured me that the motorcade from Redmond would still wait until 1300 hrs. By then, the riders and passengers of 30 motorcycles, along with 2 cages, had taken positions along the sides of the road leading to the now all-too-familiar Shelter "D" (When will it stop, I can't say. But until it does, as long as I'm capable, I'll be there).
The military honors were flawless, although I got so choked up, I couldn't remember the difference between "Present-" and "Order-Arms". I still feel bad. I feel like I let Randy down, somehow. I do hope he forgives me.
After the regular services were concluded, Kodiak presented Ramona with the Mother's Medal, from the Confederated Tribes, and to Randy's brother, the Warrior's Medal of Valor. I had hoped to present them with the plaque that is sent by our national leadership, but , believe it or not, it arrived at my house that same day, in the afternoon. I'll make arrangements to have it delivered by a ride captain in the appropriate area.
All-in-all, the mission was a sucess. No injuries that I'm aware of, and no bikes or bikers left behind. Randy was properly honored, the family respected and un-harrassed.
I can't ask for more. Thank you, all.
As usual, there are those that merit a special thanks. Each one that rides to honor the fallen are the truest patriots that can be found, and each deserves thanks. But a few are noteworthy:
Roper Ssgt BAM Tom Lee Kodiak
And, I'm sure, a host of others.
I stand & serve amid greatness: You guys.

Ride Report Lcpl Randy L. Newman Tuesday August 29, 2006
The memorial services for Randy were awesome, there were 69 bikes and 1 cage. The services were held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and in attendance were over 2000 family, friends and Patriot Guard. The Portland Pipe Band again was outstanding. PGR support was outstanding, 69 bikes and 1 cage. That's a good count for any day, exceptional for a weekday. We had riders representing the Blue Knights, Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Association, Legion Riders. All came together under 1 color, the US Flag and rode to give Lcpl Newman and his family the honor and respect well deserved. I wish to thank the Redmond Police, Deschutes County Sheriffs for their cooperation and support during this mission. Their performance was outstanding.
To the Newman family, I thank you for allowing us to honor Randy. A true American hero.
This was my first ride as Road Captain. I now know other reasons why I joined the PGR.
