While not killed overseas or in the military Deputy Bill Jones of the Roane County Sheriffs Dept was gunned down in a hail of bullets on the 11th of May.
Myself and some local Police Officers are organizing a memorial ride to pay tribute to this man on the 30th of Sept in Kingston TN
Full details and a map of the ride are at http://billjonesride.blogspot.com/
The following is reprinted from the Officer down memorial page
http://www.odmp.org/officer.php?oid=18310
Deputy Bill Jones (53), and a civilian friend Mike Brown who was participating in a ride along with him, were shot and killed when they were ambushed by two brothers who held a grudge against the region's law enforcement agencies.
The two men opened fire on Deputy Jones' patrol car as he pulled up in front of their house to serve felony warrants for aggravated assault on the men. Despite being struck by numerous rounds, Deputy Jones was able to return fire, striking one of the suspects in the arm and leg.
The wounded suspect was arrested at a local hospital after seeking treatment. The other suspect turned himself in the next day.
Deputy Jones had served with the Roane County Sheriff's Office for only nine months and had previously served with the Rockwood Police Department, Crossville Police Department, Harriman Police Department, and Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. He had a total of 33 years of law enforcement experience
Any PGR riders that wish to go on this scenic ride and pay homage are more than welcome to attend

I put it on my calendar. I'll try to be there. It was a tragic, senseless death for Deputy Jones and Mr. Brown. I appreciate the service of our LEO's who put it on the line every day.

Tell Gale I said HI.

Well, unfortunately, I won't make it either. I COULD go in the convertible, but I have to get the truck running, because I HAVE to retrieve a lot of equipment from an account Saturday, that we are closing. If I don't retrieve it, we lose it, and as the Manager, I cannot let that happen.
Jax, I will have to get with you on the donation.
Sorry Duane. If I CAN get the truck going, then I may be able to attend, in the ragtop. I will keep you posted.

| Glad you had a turnout. I got the truck running, left at 10, got home about 8. BELIEVE ME, I would have rather done the run, but this had to be done today. Two of my guys got 8 hrs OT, and I got an extra 100+ miles on the truck, burned half a tank, and had a flat on the way home... see what I mean, about wishing I could have made the ride? Any idea how much was raised for them? I hope it was enough to really help. |
