While riding into Hiawatha last night I did not know what to expect. I felt a lump in my throat at the sight of the first group of people on the side of the street with their candles, flags and hands over their hearts. I was not prepared for what I saw a few blocks down. The sight of an entire city block lined on both sides lit with candles and citizens coming out to pay respect to this young man and his family. Those of you behind me may have seen me swerve a little, this was because of something in my eyes. I happened to notice my daughter as she got off the bike and pulled her helmet off wiping her eyes. I am hoping that by having our future leaders attend these memorials and tributes to our fallen heroes, they can find away for us to meet for happier reasons. Thank you to the family of Cpl. Cole for allowing myself and my family to honor this man. Thank you to my fellow Riders for including my family into yours. And finally, Thank You to the town of Hiawatha Ks. for opening your hearts to us strangers that came to bring one of your heroes home. Bless You All.

| Good job all: Steamer.....thanks for doing this as well as all riders who gave up their Saturday night for a greater cause. The memories of this will last much longer than what ever you would have been doing otherwise. The overwhelming support by the local community to honor one of their own is more than heart warming. Steamer, Lizard, aj_junky and Poppawolf - your review of the evening was supurb. Wish I could have been there. |

I chatted online with my son today from Afghanistan. He said that the Army sent in a Combat Stress Team in to help himself and Scott's other friends and battle buddies deal with this.
I gave Chris the link to this thread, which he read while he was online with me. He is going to be passing the link along to others in their unit there. He said that it gave him great comfort to know that "Cole" was being brought home with such honor and tribute!
I thank you all.... for the honor you give to all our children that are protecting our blanket of freedom. I wish I was a "cycle rider" I would be so honored to be part of what you do for all of us!

This is to Cindy and other's who would like to join but do not ride...
This is from the front page of our website and we would be happy to have you..."We don’t care what you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a "hawk" or a "dove". It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is. You don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect."
Cindy, it sounds like you fall in this category! I'm quite sure that after you join and send your email address to your state captain, that you'll find there is plenty you can do off of two wheels!! Join our family and I bet you'll come up with all kinds of interesting and creative ways to help support our Mission.
Tell your son and his battle buddies how sorry we are for their loss and how much we appreciate their dedication to our freedom.
Thank you for sharing our website with them. I hope we help with their healing. May they all come home safely! |

Geez Lizard, you're making me blubber...You're kinda a cross between Soldiers Angels and PGR and womens Rep. It truly uplifts me when I see Family reaching out to Family. I truly believe that we are God's response to and unacceptable situation. Truly we are becoming angels in the guise of our humanity. Someone once said that we would recognize one another by the love we have for each other ( we are becoming angels in the wind...) Kai

Good grief Kai....you got to me so much with your quote on TV in Hebron, that I included it in my signature block:
"The reason we wear sunglasses is so that nobody will see our tears". Yes, I did credit you.
Now you did it again with your "We are becoming Angels in the Wind" thing.
I think you need to be our national spokesman, or perhaps our poet laureat or something.
See you in Hiawatha....Regards |

I will be going up from El Dorado. I believe a group from Wichita is getting on the turnpike at the K15 entrance. They are to be at the Matfield Green service area on the turnpike at 5am. That is where I plan on meeting them. |

I got this in my e-mail from Glitter and wanted to share with all of you that have responded to God's call unselfishly...I know that I felt the heart tug like the rest of you and now its an opportunity to become an anonymous hand of God...wether you realize it or not you are angels to those who have called you....Kai
Copy of e-mail:
I read your post this evening, in response to Lizard's post to me. I am Cindy, the mom of a friend of Cpl Cole's. You all are amazing people! Even with dealing my own grief, through my son, of the loss of Scott, the feeling of respect I have for all you PGR fills my heart. If I might... you all are: The Patriot Guard, Wind of the Angels Using from your post: "one who loves our country, one who protects - the spirit of God's messengers" That exactly describes, to me, who you all are! I will be following Lizard's advice and contacting the PGR chairman here in Minnesota and find out how I can help be part of this. Thank you, thank you... on behalf of myself and those soldiers as FOB Bermel who served with hero Cpl Cole. Cindy McLean
Cindy, I wanted to thank you for your kind words, it is truly our honor to stand for Heroes Like CPL Cole who gave his life for us...and it is also an Honor to greet all the Heroes defending and standing for this country. Hello fellow soldiers in Irac and Afgasnistan monitoring this site. Know that the Patriot Guard will be here awaiting your most Welcome Return!!!!!! Come Home Safely !!!! ever your servant, Kai

I wish I were an artist, because I have this beautiful image in my mind of a formation of riders carrying the American and PGR flags on a mission to honor a fallen hero. They are riding in the sky with the sunset as a backdrop. It's kinda like an opera by Wagner where the Valkyries descend after a battle to gather the fallen heroes and waft them off to Valhalla. OK...it's dumb, but what a picture it would be to symbolize the Patriot Guard Riders. "Angels in the Wind"....OK, I'll shut up now and go crawl back in my hole. So I'm a romantic.
See you guys in Hiawatha. |

| greyline,
After I looked at your profile, your user name makes perfect sense to me. A ring-knocker! Honored to have you with us, sir.
Yesterday, I was driving between Hiawatha and St. Joseph ahead of the Escort Ride. It was a brief and welcome respite for me in the middle of the Mission. I was listening to Wagner's Die Walkure and looking at the clouds on the horizon. The swirls in the sky looked to me like the Valkyries bearing the warrior to Valhalla, just as the "Ride" swelled to crescendo and the aria began. I am glad I was wearing my sunglasses, because they hid my tears (thanks, Kai, for that new euphemism!). I have learned not to be ashamed of my tears (the PGR has been good for me in that regard), but I did not need to share them with anyone else.
Like you, I imagined our Riders as Valkyries of an earthbound sort. Maybe that is part of why our work means so much to me- the Ride stirs my Scottish blood, Celtic iron tempered with Norse fire.
As I drove on, my thoughts moved to the Lakota legends of the "Ghost Riders", hunting buffalo in the thunderstorms, and the cowboy legends of those same Ghost Riders driving herds in the sky; and about Herne the Hunter and the Wild Hunt, from my ancestors' folklore. I felt very close to those Old Ones, as if their spirits were traveling with me.
Thank you for your post, greyline. It gave me a chance to put my thoughts into words. Ride safe; I look forward to seeing you Tuesday.

Big Dog-
I am originally from Hiawatha myself. I knew Scotty from school, small town and he was only three years my senior. I am currently in my seventh year in the Army Reserves and living in Manhattan KS. I would be honored to join in your ride in Hiawatha. Scott is our town's first loss since WWII and deserves every possible sign of respect that our humble town can offer. I have seen many places on this list where the riders thank the town of Hiawatha. Riders, on behalf of Hiawatha, Thank You and I'll see you on the road.
Thank you everyone, for all you do,

After reading most of the posts on this website, I have to send a THANK YOU to all of you. I cannot tell you how much your words of appreciation mean to the soldiers serving the great Red, White, and Blue. Being a soldier myself, I can tell you that just knowing that all of you are behind us and supporting us the way that the Patriot Guard Riders do just makes our job that much more meaningful. If it weren’t for all of you, I would not take as much pride as I do putting on this uniform everyday.
To the Cole family, your son will never be forgotten. I know you’re a strong family, for Scott was just as strong. Please know that I salute Scott and will always carry out his mission for as long as I wear this uniform. I know I was not in the same unit as Scott, but I am definitely proud to have had him as a fellow comrade.
I realize it's sometimes unclear as to what US soldiers are doing all over the world, but to know that you guys understand and support soldiers like CPL Scott Cole, you have no idea what that means to us. Thanks again Patriot Guard Riders, Veterans, and everyone else who appreciates what the soldiers are sacrificing daily.
I am proud to be serving each and every one of you. Thank you for everything that you do. Because of you, there is no doubt that I am proud to call myself an American.
Salute to you CPL Scott Cole and thank you for serving so bravely for all of us. You will never be forgotten.
Very Respectfully, -SPC Treka J. Smith |

While I am unable to physically support this noble effort, my heart will be in Hiawatha. To the Cole family, you've heard many times before, and will again about how much of a hero Scott is. We all must just remember his sacrifice should never be considered in vain, because of those like him, the red, white, and blue will remain. God bless you all during this trying and difficult time. My apologies for my absence. But I know my brothers will pick me up. dc sends |
