"Friends mourn Ringgold Marine killed in Iraq By Stump Martin Staff Writer
RINGGOLD, Ga. — Area residents joined family and friends Thursday in grieving the death of Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Scott, 24, who was killed Sunday in the crash of his armored vehicle about 45 miles west of Baghdad. Lance Cpl. Scott was a passenger in the Humvee when the driver lost control and the vehicle flipped, killing two of the five Marines inside, family members said. Local residents said Lance Cpl. Scott is the first Catoosa County resident to die in the Iraq war. His body is expected to be brought home next week. Jody Crawford, 22, a wrestling teammate of Lance Cpl. Scott at Ringgold High School, said he will miss the friend who always offered him encouragement. "I can’t describe how terrible this is for me," Mr. Crawford said. "I just bawled my eyes out for 30 to 45 minutes. I will never get to tell him I appreciate him again." Lance Cpl. Scott had been in Iraq for four months and was assigned to the Anti-Terrorism Battalion,, 4th4 Marineth Marine Expeditionary Brigade, stationed at Camp Fallujah. He was scheduled to return March 10 to home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He leaves a wife, Mendy, and their 7-month-old daughter, Carmien. "Being a member of the anti-terrorism team sounds like Josh," Mr. Crawford said. "He would never shy away from the things that were tough." Mr. Crawford said daily news of the war will seem much closer now. "You think about those stories being far away and happening in another community," he said. "But a lot of those are communities like Ringgold, all across the nation, where this is happening every day. This brings the war home." Catoosa County Commissioner Ken Marks, who served withwith thethe 101st101 Airbornest Airborne Division in Vietnam, said he was sure the entire county was saddened by the death. "I was in Vietnam when Jimmy Morris, Marion "Little Boy" Patrick and Steve Lance from Rossville died in combat," he said. "I went to school and played ball with those guys. I’m sure this hits home to those who were around that young man, just like that did me." Mr. Marks said Lance Cpl. Scott "is a hero who gave his life for us." "He didn’t do it because he had to," Mr. Marks said. "He did it because he was a patriot and was fighting for his city, county, state and country. My prayers are for his family." Ringgold pharmacist Chuck Gass said members of the Scott family are customers. "I personally appreciate everybody over there fighting in Iraq," Mr. Gass said. "He made a decision to go and leave a baby and wife here. It’s a real big sacrifice he made, and it turned out to be even bigger." Mr. Gass said he now realizes "how close to us (the Iraq war) can get and how real it is."
