Special Mission

Fallen Soldiers Healing Fields

By the

Quad Cities Families In Support of Troops

August 17th –20th, 2006

Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery

1022 E. 39th St.

Davenport, Iowa

The PGR has been invited to participate in this 3rd annual event. National has given us the go ahead to list this event as a Special Mission. The following is a bit of background information and a preliminary plan. When further details become finalized, the plan will be refined and updates posted on this thread. More information regarding the Quad Cities Families In Support of Troops can be found at www.qcfist.org.

Mission Concept. The Fallen Soldiers Healing Field is set up and operated in similar fashion to the Traveling Viet Nam Memorial Wall. The PGR will have two responsibilities in supporting the QC FIST with this event.

1)      Flag For the Fallen escort and posting of.

2)      Provide volunteers for reception tent and field guides.

Flag for the Fallen escort and posting.

The Flag for the Fallen is a symbolic memorial flag designed in honor of Sgt Justin W. Garvey and all service members lost during the current War on Terror. It measures 3’x5’. The white background symbolizes the purity of their hearts and spirits. The black field cross signifies the solemness of their dedication and devotion. The red lettering represents their valor and the blood they shed. The gold star is for the Gold Star families. The gold border embodies the enduring love and memories that only family and friends can share. These memories are more precious than gold.

This flag shall be handled with the same care, honor and respect as the American Flag. Once posted, it will be the key and final flag in a field of approximately 100 American Flags, each bearing the names of 30 fallen heroes attached to the poles.

The PGR will have the honor of bringing the Flag for the Fallen into the cemetery grounds as part of the opening ceremony on August 17th, 2006 at 07:00. Twenty to twenty five Riders will be required for this formation. One lead bike with large flag capabilities has been designated and a second will be needed for backup. Uniformed firefighters, LEOs and military personnel have been requested to participate in this phase as well. Details of this plan will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

Reception tent and field guide volunteers;

To allow the Healing Field to remain open 24hrs a day through out the event, approx 80 volunteers will be needed.

Tent volunteers will;

1)      meet & greet guests

2)      invite passers by to visit the memorial

3)      invite guests to sign the guest book and comment

4)      provide guest with a program

5)      answer questions

6)      look up fallen soldiers flag placement

7)      provide map locations

8)      assign a field guide to guests

Field guides will;

1)      assist guests in locating their desired names

2)      listen to guests comments as needed

3)      assist in general operation of the field

Candlelight vigil name readers will;

1)      read names of the fallen in shift intervals

An information meeting has been scheduled for July 25th, 2006. The meeting will begin at 7:00pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 1111 W. 35th St. Davenport, Iowa. The QC FIST coordinator, Bobbie Wheeler, would like to have all volunteers signed up by August 1st so as to allow time for scheduling and final plans. As PGR RC, I would also like to have as many Riders as possible signed up by this time.

This is a great opportunity for the PGR to work with other soldier/veteran support groups. We can show how much we do care and can provide more support than only Honor Missions.

Take care & ride safe,

Preach

The organizers of this event, QC FIST, are really excited about having the PGR participate. It is important to PGR credibility in the Quad City area that we have a good showing. Even if you cannot make the opening ceremonies, or dedicate much time, please try to stop by to sign the guest book or alteast leave a comment here.

Thanks & ride safe,

A message from QC Families In Support of Troops.

Dear Patriot Guard Riders,

QC Families In Support of Troops, better known as QC F.I.S.T. would like to say Thank You for considering your participation in our yearly memorial “Fallen Soldiers Healing Field” this August. The Memorial began in 2004 on a thin thread of completion, but our commitment was as firm as those we set forth to honor that we made it happen. Although this memorial is structured much like the traveling Vietnam Wall, we felt the duration needed to be shorter but certainly longer then over a weekend, thus our four day schedule. Since this memorial opens during the work week we set Opening Ceremonies at a half and hour length beginning at 7:00 AM so many could attend before going to work. Now of course this doesn’t work for all work schedules but for most.

Any participation you may choose to contribute will only enhance this memorial. It will be an extreme pleasure to meet any and all of you.

Sincerely Yours,

Bobbie Wheeler, President
QC Families In Support of Troops

I can make it all four days if we can get a really great motel rate. I will be coming from Bloomington, IL early afternoon 17th and leave any time on the 20th. Put you where you need me, on any shift ,for any length of time. I am in a red SUV cage with 3 large flags on back.

I cannot make the July 25th meeting, however.

I can make the opening day and possibly all 4 days.
Does anyone know if there is a campground nearby?

Scott County Park would be the closest, and offers any type of camping you choose to do.  Located just about 6 miles north of Davenport, it is easy to get to and from.

I can get out there late on Friday evening (18th) after work and work the late evening 18th, all the 19th and 20th. Need to get out of there at a reasonable hour on Sunday so I can ride back and get ready for work that Monday. I'd be interested in a reasonbly priced camping spot for my tent and bike. I can't make the meeting on the 25th though.

I should be able to make the 17th, however my bike isnt equipped for flags.  Any local help with this (how tos) would be greatly appreciated.  Being new at this someone might need to tell me what Im suppose to do.  17th would be the only day I could make it.

Is there anyone going through Des Moines?  Riding in a group is better than alone.

To all that have replied and volunteered we will be putting out info on hotel and camping the first part of next week. I know many of you are involved in the Honor Mission for PO1 Jerry Tharp this afternoon. We will be there also and hope to meet as many of you as possible, time permitting. Of course the Honor Mission comes first and foremost. We will reply to all that have expressed a desire to help us out. Hope to see some of you at the volunteer meeting Tuesday July 25th at the Davenport Knights of Columbus 1111 W 35th St. at 7:00 P.M. Steve
