The day was cold with snow on the ground. This kept the turnout down. However I counted 50 with us at one time, and over 30 more near the protesters.
We were joined by members of the Augusta Rescue Squad, Altered Vision Car Club, WV ABATE, as well as some of the nicest people from the local community you could ever meet.
The state police had us a good 200 feet from the protesters. Early arrivals went over, and some college students were there also. I had heard some students did a good job heckling the intruders. There was one small incident towards the end when a retired miner had enough of the flag stomping and lurched for one of the intruders. The police stopped him. Some of the community shook the rental vans and the intruders departed. No one missed them afterward.
Our group carried their flags and sang. I believe they were successful in showing their respect to the families and the community. I felt honored to be there with each and every one.
At one point Senator Jay Rockefeller come over and greeted us. He gave his thanks and then moved on to the service.
Those who could stayed for the memorial service. The service done a nice job honoring the 12 miners. Each man was well loved by their families and the community. It was a terrible tragedy what happened at the Sago mine. Our prayers go to each family for their healing.
I want to thank the community for inviting the Patriot Guard into their home and coming out to stand with us. The miners and their families deserve all of our respect. This community is strong in its faith in God and Country. It was a pleasure being there with you.
