19 Jun 2006 6:20 PM Alert
I had planned to leave work early on Friday. The rally time was 5pm, with KSU (kickstands up) at 6. I knew south Huntsville traffic would be bad on a Friday.

Well, how many things in life ever go as planned?

I was actually late leaving work. All the way home, I kept telling myself: you will make this mission. He (LT Scott Love) is a hometown boy and we support our own.

I will omit the part where I sat in stop and go traffic cursing the ALDOT.
I made it to the rally point in time. I was relieved to see a good sized group there already.

Shortly Chappy, our RC called us together for a briefing, then we proceeded to the location of the Memorial service.

It was then Chappy got a call and had to leave due to a family emergency. He asked me and Slinky to step up and make sure we stayed organized. I had nothing to worry about. The people knew why we were there and were already taking thier flags and standing in line along the sidewalk across from the church.

As I joined the flag line, I reflected on what I had read and heard about Scott Love.

A Grissom High grad. Loved acting. I read a quote from one of his high school teachers, a teacher I had at that same school. I thought about how, though separated by several years, we shared alot in common.

Except one thing. Scott Love had answered the call, and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

That brought me back around to why I, and all of us, were there: To honor and show respect to a Hometown Hero and to support his family, to let them know that his and their sacrifice has meaning, that America cares.

After the service was over, we broke ranks and went our separate ways.

I do want to thank those members that made water runs. It was deeply appreciated. Thanks to HPD, they were very helpful and kept us informed on what was going on.

Most of all, I thank LT Scott Love and his family.

Scott paid the ultimate price to ensure we enjoy the freedoms we too often take for granted.

To the Love family: Thank you for allowing us the privilage to show our support and to honor Scott. May your mourning and grief be tempered in the knowledge that Scott touched many lifes and will not be forgotten.

To LT Scott Love: Thank you. May you be blessed with many standing ovations on that big stage in Heaven. I stand and applaud you.

Humbly,
Richard
