I echo the sentiments of previous posts. Thank you to the family of Sgt Mark Smykowski, an American hero, for inviting us. It was my honor to hold a flag in his honor. And thank you very much to the Willoughby Hills Friends Church for your wonderfuil hospitality.
God Bless Sgt Smykowski. May he rest in honored peace amoung heroes at Arlington. |

Keith did a great job on this Mission as well as the Mission the next day in Canton. He has surely earned the Ride Captain patch I gave him this day. He, and all the Ohio RC's are a pleasure to work with, and stand beside.
Every mission is different, and it is becoming more and more clear, WHY we do what we do. I'm not sure there are words, and though I search, nothing seems to really relay the feelings at Missions, to those that have not attended one. They don't get less emotional, but probably the opposite. So many missions, so many soldier, corpsman, and families. So many affected, and so many lives touched.
This is the first mission I didn't contact the family face to face. I entered the Church, signed the condolence book, stood in line, viewing the pictures of the life of Sgt. Smykowski, from baby to Hero, family to friends, friends to Brothers in Arms. I didn't make it, I just couldn't make it. I bowed my head, then stood and saluted Sgt. Smykowski.
I must say that I have never seen us received so well by any Church. We've been given water, facilities, and been invited for brunch before, but this was different, way different. In our Lines of Respect, we were delivered water or the pop of our desire, then came the sub sandwiches ! I was floored by the thoughts and support of this Church. A lady from the Church, serving all who entered, anything they wished, even came outside to speak with us and shake our hands.
It futhers my belief in our affects on others, not knowing us, but wondering, why? Why strangers? It all comes down to the main word in our Mission Statement,,,,,,, RESPECT. We are witnessing a reciprocation of this respect. Our visual point is being made that America cares, recognizes, and appreciates the sacrifices of the fallen and their families. Our Mission are being accomplished in the highest manner possible.
How proud I am to see the familiar faces at these missions, and how delighted I am to see new faces as well. Though I'm not real good with names, I never forget the faces, and the hearts hanging out.
I can't see planning a State Get Together, or even a regional event, for these Missions of Respect will always have my priority, and I suspect , the priority of our members. Therefore, our Missions will be our get together, our celebration of our freedom, our celebration of a sacrificed life.
Sgt. Smykowsi, we will continue for you, those before you, and those after you, so help us God, we will.
Until we are needed again, be well, be safe, be free, and enjoy the time with your family. |
