'Mentor 7' Marine Killed In Iraq Marine Was 2000 Mentor High School Grad
UPDATED: 7:01 pm EDT June 8, 2006
MENTOR, Ohio -- A Mentor High School graduate was killed in Iraq on Tuesday.
Marine Sgt. Mark Smykowski, 23, died when an armored Humvee went by a roadside bomb, NewsChannel5 reported.
Smykowski was with the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion stationed near Fallujah.
NewsChannel5 reported that when Smykowski left Mentor to join the Marines, he didn't go alone -- his best friends went with him. The group became known as the Mentor 7, a group of seven friends and brothers who served together.
"If it came down to a fight he would have never lost. But he didn't have that chance," said Smykowski's friend, Brian Halan.
Fellow Mentor 7 members Halan and Matt Neath said Smykowski loved the Marines, and probably would have made a career of it, even though he didn't fit the stereotype.
"Very caring, very gentle -- the best friend anybody could ask for," said Halan.
His friends said that they spoke to Smykowski just a few months ago, just before he started his second tour in Iraq.
"It was a job. We all felt the same way and when they told us to go somewhere, we picked up our gear and went where we had to go," said Neath.
"I just want everyone to remember that those people in uniform aren't just numbers, they're souls, best friends, brothers and family," said Halan. "He will be greatly missed. I just love him."
Smykowski's two younger brothers are also in the Marines, one of whom is a member of the Mentor 7.
Halan and Neath are both out of the Marines now, but will escort Smykowski's body from the airport to the funeral home.
Smykowski was a 2000 graduate of Mentor High School.

Casualty Assistance has been contacted and given the information of the PGR and our offer of services to this family in their most dark hour. I am awaiting word from the family.
Please be patient. I like to give the family time, and will not bother them further. When they are ready to reply to me, they will. We do not wish to be another problem to them, but aid them in their time of need.
The CACO was unaware of us, therefore, there is a certain education period he must go through by visiting our web site, then offering our services to the family.
So please, for now, pray for this family to heal. We will be here when called upon, no matter when that is, or where. |
