BAGHDAD, Iraq — A Black Hawk helicopter has crashed in northern Iraq, killing all 12 people believed to have been on board, and five U.S. Marines were killed over the weekend by roadside bombings and gunfire, the U.S. military said Sunday.

The helicopter crashed just before midnight Saturday about seven miles east of Tal Afar, the military said. Records indicated it was carrying eight passengers and a crew of four, the military said.

The UH-60 Black Hawk was part of a two-helicopter team moving between bases when communications were lost, it said.

A search and rescue operation was launched and the aircraft was found about noon Sunday, it added.

The names of those aboard weren't released pending notification of relatives.
