Statement by the Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence on the death of Master Corporal Jeffrey Scott Walsh

NR–06.048 - August 9, 2006

OTTAWA--The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today on the death of Master Corporal Jeffrey Scott Walsh.

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Master Corporal Walsh, who was killed today in Afghanistan in a weapons related accident.  Master Corporal Walsh was a member of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba.

Master Corporal Walsh should be remembered for his achievements and the dutiful qualities that he demonstrated in serving his country.

We are proud of Master Corporal Walsh, and are humbled by the willingness of all Canadian Forces members who serve Canada in a challenging and unpredictable theatre of operation.

I take comfort in knowing that our Canadian Forces members have the skills and resilience to soldier on, and that the memory of Master Corporal Walsh will guide them in their journey."

Master Corporal Walsh leaves his wife and three children.
