MISSION REPORT:

Welcome Home - Combat Aviation Brigade Advance Party - Topeka/Ft Riley - 18 OCT 2008

What a great day for a mission!!! Even though the day started with very heavy fog, by mission stage, it was mostly sunny and warming up. I will make my report shorter than usual, because Wingnut from Kansas City in his recount did an excellent job of catching the very essence of the mission itself. His report follows. I will also include some thoughts from some others. I will only add a few things to it.

First of all, Wingnut, thank you for getting the group together to come over from the KC metro area. Rev Ken Van from Junction City brought a group over from that area. Thank you both so much for your dedication and for doing that. I can't thank you enough. I was glad the Kai from Manhattan was able to make it. I hope your grandson's 19th birthday party went well Kai. On a person note, a good friend of mine from college showed up, Scott Starr. I have not seen him in a long time. It was great to have a chance to meet his wife Dianna and catch up with him. I also had the honor of meeting MOHarleyBro and Pappy from KC. Thanks for making the trip down!

At the time of the mission briefing, 34 bikes arrived for the escort. I found out that two soldiers did not return, and we observed a moment of silence in the memory. We lined up the bikes and 4 more riders arrived. In 10 minutes, 4 buses with 154 soldiers came around the corner and it was on. We were doing what we do best. A special thanks to the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department for traffic control. They did a great job. Wild Bill and Richard Baldwin chipped in along the route for traffic control too. Thank you guys for helping out.

Thanks Wingnut for taking over the lead after the flag mishap on the original. Kai, I can't wait to see the pics and video of the mission. You always do a great job. I encourage everyone to go to the national site and check out his videos. Here is the link:

I think I will conclude here because Wingnut in his report capture the rest of the mission better than I could ever do.

To all the riders that showed up, thank you. You represent the best of this nation. You will always be people I look up to and make me proud to say, 'I am a Patriot Guard Rider!!' To the 154 soldiers and their families of the Combat Aviation Brigade Advance Party, thank you for service to our great country. The sacrifices you make to insure our that freedoms and liberties are protected will never be forgotten!! Welcome home heroes, welcome home.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Thoughts from Bill 'Wild Bill' Miller

This was my first coming home mission, what an absolute honor and moving moment to see those buses, this one touched me in a completely different manner, as it should. All of you that were there, u r the best and God Bless you all, thanx Vance,…… wild bill

Mission Report from Wingnut

Lizard,

You missed a really great Welcome Home. I think it sucks we weren't allowed on Post at Riley. But we did deliver 4 bus loads of Heroes back from the Sand Box. Vance talked with one of the Officers and sadly 2 members did not make it back with the rest of their Company.

There were about 35-40 Bikes, KAI came from Manhattan , and got video of the Escort going West on I-70. He said he posts them on the PGR web page. I will have to figure out how to get to them.

A husband an wife team started out leading the way, after we hit I-70 and about 55-60 mph just West of Topeka, his flag started to fall of his bike, they both pulled over to repair it. That put me as the lead flag bike. What an Honor that was for me. KAI passed us a couple of times to get the video as we traveled.

At the gate of course we had to stand down, but we did line both sides of the entrance and gave them HONORS they so deserved. Everyone in the bus was yelling and clapping for us as they passed. They all were happy to see us and that we would take the time to do this for them.

MoHarleyBro aka Bob Sever, Pappy and his girl friend had a new guy with them for his first Mission . Turns out he is as crazy as Bob and some guy called Wingnut. We left Doc's about 10:30 or so. Maybe Bob could get Pappy's email address for me.

We stopped in Manhattan for dinner, afterwards, got home about 19:30 which made it a 10 hour day. I showed 305 miles. But WHAT A DAY to have your chin in the wind. (or CHINS in my case.) Couldn't ask for better weather.

Vance, did a Great Job putting this together, what with all the changes, it still worked out just fine. We need to work on the Base Commander about letting a bunch of Out Law Bikers on POST.

Wingnut...
