Escort for 775th Engineering Detachment TN National Guard
Jackson TN to Camp Shelby
July 29, 2008
The Tennessee National Guard will be sending 13 soldiers on a deployment overseas. Tennesee Patriot Guard Riders has been asked to escort them to Mississippi. We have answered the call before and we now prepare again. Working with Mississippi 's Patriot Guard Riders, we have come up with a plan to escort these soldiers as far as West Point MS. At that point, MS PGR will assume the task of further escort to Camp Shelby. Staging date and time: 29 July 08 beginning 0600 - KSU 0720 Staging Location: PILOT GAS STATION exit 85, off I-40, there is a Denny's located there as well. We will be making a straight shot through Jackson TN on 45 South. Madison County Sheriff escort has been arranged by TN National Guard. We will escort one bus to West Point MS, 151.92 miles . I have a cage that has agreed to bring some extra gasoline for roadside top offs, for those of us on smaller bikes. We will (the smaller bikes) make a stop as soon as my trip meter reaches 110 miles. Harry will pull over with us and we will top off quickly then rejoin the group. The bikes that pull over for fuel will pull over in a group and leave as a group to ensure safe egress and re entry in regards to road way. We may only have police escort to Madison County TN line. Traffic laws have to be obeyed, and we wil cover details at briefing as to how we will work this mission. The main thing I wish to stress is this: If you are in front of that bus, keep an eye on it. Do not lose it, if you do, pull over this is an ESCORT mission, not a race. Upon arrival at MS state line, we may or may not again have a trooper escort. We will adjust as needed on that aspect. MS PGR RC is working on that with MHP. We will rendevous with MS PGR at the Fast Break Gas Station, 1144 Highway 45 south West Point MS. At that point any TN riders wishing to ride a bit further are encouraged to do so. Expect MS PGR to hop in along the way between Jackson TN and West point and also beyond west point to Camp Shelby. It will then be MS PGR's escort and any TN rider will please follow the requests of the MS RC . I have asked MS to join us in escorting a group of TN National Gaurd soldiers and they have accepted and are looking forward to the joint effort. I thank all in advance from both states for their support on this mission. Ride safe, top off your tanks at the staging area, and prepare to ride a couple hours down 45 to meeet with our MS brothers and sisters. Flags will not be required for a flag line but if they're on the bikes, bring em! Expect a few family and possible media at Armory. Please cover up any foul language patches on vests or helmet stickers. Again, media types will wish to know about other topics other than unit deploying. Refer those type of questions to myself or any other RC present. Only speak of the respect and honor we are showing for this unit today. Leave those that deserve no publicity out of the equation. What follows is the mission report for today's awesome ride!
0430- Awake, pour coffee, get rain gear bungi corded to seat strap. Shower, finish coffee, pull out onto TN 197 where I live. 200 yards from driveway, swerve to avoid possum. Just seconds after that, attacked by sucidal racoon who failed to hit my bike despite his best efforts. Rattled by the wild life, visor and glasses fogging, I thought "I'm just not supposed to be here today".
I pushed on, arrived at the staging area. First rider in was a first timer Jerry P. , Jackson PD Captain (RET). Eventually we had 9 bikes and a cage running chase for us. After a solid breakfast at the Denny's , we pulled together for a ride brief.
We arrived at the Armory at 0740, for a shove off time of 0800. I dismounted and greeted soldiers, family, local dignitaries and such. All riders did the same, and the family support unit had water and OJ as well as donuts waiting for any one willing to partake. A cup of juice, a bottle of water and soon we were back on the road to begin our escort.
With Jackson PD and Madison County Deputies leading the way, we left the families, General, supporters as well as Mayor Gist and Sherriff Woolfork of Madison County waving to us from the parking lot.
At the city limits our local PD escort left, same thing at the Madison county line on 45 south. It was now my job to keep us with the bus. We rode a few miles and I was told by Billy L to move out a bit quicker. We did and we had a great run to West Point MS. Along the way, a guy who lives in Corinth and could not be here for this, was in the median, flag flowing, lights on bike blinking. He stood at attention, saluted as I rolled past and held it until our support vehicle went by. Thank you Tommy W., bet you didn't recognize ole doc on lead bike huh?
Our arrival at west Point happened with out any incidents and all arrived safely. A few minutes spent shaking hands and greeting a husband and wife team from MS PGR. Jim and Lisa H. Thankyou from the TN National Guard. They thought that was real nice, not being MS NG, you guys came out to say hello and all that.
After a great meal with excellent company, we powered up and headed north as a group. We stopped once for a rest stop in Corinth than road in to Chester/Madison Counties, where I knew my time with the group was close to being complete. It is always sad to leave the group and ride solo. For me the hardest part was that right hand turn off 45 to head home just 6 miles that way.
I am home now, tired in a good way, thrilled that we made a great sendoff happen, and excited to have ridden with this group out here in WEST TN. I look forward to the next feel good mission or send off.
I want to thank 1 The National Guard of TN, the 775th engineers specifically. You honored us by allowing us to ride with you. 2- Madison County Sheriff Department/ Jackson PD 3- Every family member who today adjusts to life put on hold until daddy, honey, nieghbor, friend, brother, uncle returns. 4- Every PGR member who posted here or said prayers silently and with out public recognition. 5- Every single one of you who rode with me and put up with my "rookieness" when it came to leading the pack. I appreciate the humor and the comraderie. It was a pleasure to ride with you all.
We had 1 first timer, and one more on only his thrid mission. These are the newest members here in west TN and they are solid, available and ready to go. I appreciate all of you and it is a true blessing to have ridden with all of you today.
I thoroughly enjoyed the short ride, but that stock seat has got to go!!! WEST TENNESSEE PATRIOT GUARD SET OUT AND STUCK TO THE PLAN, WE DELIVERED ON OUR PROMISE and those guys on the bus, will as the General said, "Remember this for a long time". That alone makes what we do worth it!
775th Families: Today you watched us lead your soldiers out on day one of their deployment.
I make this promise here: We sent them out, and TN PGR will be there when they come home. Just listen for our bikes and you will know they are home. Should a need arise, I can be reached at (731) 313-1678 or puckmedic@yahoo.com
Moderators- This one is a wrap, and it was definitley a pleasure to be part of this today.
Ambiant temp was 100 or above. Heat index was around 120, no heat casualties occurred.
Respectfully submitted
