I received the following email from Mike, aka Blindvet.  He is requesting PGR presence at the Blinded Veterans association National Convention in August.  Blindvet has been an awesome supporter of all veteran issues and has traveled all over the state in support of the PGR.

Hi there, blindvet here...when Louann was State Captain we had talked about PGR support for the Blinded Veterans Association National Convention next month. After conversation with the Assistant Convention Director, a member who is an old Air Force guy BTW, and after discussion we thought maybe the best type mission may be a "corridor of flags" at the entrance to the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. In conversations with him, the Convention Coordinator, and the Convention Director, it seemed like the best plan. It's indoors, free parking (weekends), and the coordinator said she would contact the city and see about getting an area blocked off as reserved for the PGR on the street.

Count me in! I consider this an absolute honor to stand for these veterans, and especially for Mike, who has a HEART OF GOLD, and boundless love and respect for his fellow vets.

I'll be coming up from Bisbee in my cage, and would like to know if I can meet whomever, wherever, to ride in with someone, as it'll be easier than bringing my cage in. Now that I'm used to being down here in the boonies with only two traffic lights, I feel flummoxed driving in the Big City lately. (smile)

Very much looking forward to this.

Just an update, now that I have some numbers. We have a program called "Operation Peer Support", designed to help OIF/OEF servicemen and women who lose vision as a result of combat activities make the transition back to civilian life. This program is well backed nationally by major corporations, so we are able to bring the service people to the convention and meet Vets who have succeeded after vision loss. They are also shown the avenues of training and employment readily available to them. In Phoenix this year, we have the largest number of Peer Support servicemen ever, a total of 17. Of the 17, 14 are sponsored by US companies, the remaining 3 are UK soldiers (a first!)here to learn about the program. 6 of the US and 2 of the UK soldiers are still "active duty" at this time. I have met 4 or 5 of these guys so far, and I can tell you that their attitudes are amazing! To have these catastrophic injuries and have such a positive outlook is a true testiment to the support systems these men have had.

Having vision has little to do with having sight, and everything to do with having resolve.

We had a great turn out on Saturday 25 motorcycles & one cage. We set our flag line up in side the ball room on both sides surrounding the tables and the vets were very excited to know that we were there to honor them. I spoke with a few of them, some of them were from Britain and they came up to the flag line and personally thanked us. Mike "blind vet" was the happiest I've ever seen him. Larry, the director, personally thanked us at the end, and expressed how impressed he was with the Patriot Guard Riders. It was my honor to be ride captain for this mission and I thank the Blind Veterans Association for inviting us down to be a part of it.

I want to thank everyone who was there Saturday and everyone who wanted to be but couldn’t (I know how that can be). After the banquet I had about 50 or so people tell me how impressed they were and ask me about the Patriot Guard Riders. For those that were there, the young double amputee Marine who was still active duty celebrated his 22nd birthday that evening. He was one of our “Operation Peer Support” people…if anyone ever has concerns about the future of our country, just talk to one of them. Through all the loss and adversity they still have a flame burning in them so bright… He’s trying to figure out a job he can do with no legs or vision to stay in the Corps. Also had a man from Luke, who had an IED he was diffusing go off…he said the switch was bad and chuckled… A third soldier was two weeks out of Iraq, wanted so much to come to the convention they let him come from the Hines VA hospital in Chicago…then developed an infection in one of his eyes and spent the week at the VA hospital here. He did get out for the Friday and Saturday celebrations. Once more, thanks, to quote our past State Captain…”You Guys Rock!” Mike
