Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Memorial Day, Elwood, IL - 26 May 08
Once again we have been requested by Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery to provide parking coordination and elderly assistance for their Memorial Day Services. Last year over 4,000 members of the Families of our Fallen Warriors were in attendance.
They are estimating a larger turn out this year.
***** MISSION DETAIL *****
Date:
May 26, 2008 ( Monday )
Staging:
0815 ( 8:15 am)
Staging Location:
Follow Hoff Road, past the cemetery entrance road, towards the Administration Building. Just before you reach the Administration Building Parking there's a stop sign. Turn left. (It will be marked "Motorcycle Parking".) PGR Members in cages and bikes are going to meet and park in that area. If anyone questions you, let them know you're with PGR.
Mission Brief:
0830 ( 8:30 am)
Please be on time.
The Memorial Day services are open to the public, but our efforts are going to be needed as staff support.
We're hoping to get a good turn out of volunteers, as the cemetery is very large and the crowds come quickly.
This is an all weather event, rain or shine, be prepared to deal with the elements -- It may be a good idea to bring along some sun screen or rain gear
Facilities are bare, it would be helpful to plan on being self sufficient, and it's probably a good idea to bring along a bottle of water for yourself.
If anyone already owns an Orange Safety Vest, please bring that along. It's not necessary to go buy one special for this, as the cemetery should have some extra we could use.
The Ceremony begins at 11:30 am. They're expecting over 5000 guests this year. Most of the vehicles will arrive after 10:30. They're hoping we'll all be in place by 9:00. Things can get a little hectic, please remember to treat all of the guests with Respect.
We should be able to wrap things up around 1:00 - 1:30.

I just got off the phone with one of the planners from the cemetery and they are really expecting a large crowd this year. Last year we ended up getting 30-40 members to help us out and I'm hoping we can match that again this year.
I hate to sound redundant, but it's a tough job, and someone's got to do it.
Please if you can afford the time, we need you !!

Brenda and I did this last year with Scoot. We were assigned the back part of the cemetery and it was more than just directing cars where to park along the roads. We helped our Senoirs onto the shuttles and directed people that walked to the Memorial Services. We even helped a few people relocate their vehicles aftewards.
We will be bringing a few extra safety vests. Please make sure you have some water and just in case a rain coat. Be prepared to be fullfilled. Scoot and Bogie are doing a fine job with this, so lets get out there and support them with this mission. We were very honored to be able to do this and I know you will be too.

| I'd like to offer my help! A few questions tho. Should I have PGR magnets on my cage? Can non-PGR people come with me and help? |

Hi Brett,
We'd love to have you come help, and feel free to bring along anyone else who would like to help. The one thing I'll caution you on is it's not really a good place for small children. Because of the amount of cars we're dealing with, I don't feel small children would be safe.
There's not really a need for magnets on your car since we won't be doing a procession.
See you Monday and thanks.

Thank-you to all the members of PGR who thought that lending assistance at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, and assisting the numerous Gold Star Family members who attend the services there was important enough to share some of your Memorial Day. The Director and every member of the Cemetery always appreciate our help, and yesterday was no exception. If they didn't personally thank-you, I would like to pass on their personal thanks, as they asked me to make sure everyone understands how grateful they are.
If you assisted, and did not receive a volunteers patch, please e-mail Scoot or myself, as we have a few extras on hand.
Again........Thank-you all for your help !!!!
Respects, Ed |

Each year the number of cars and people grow in what seems to be exponential proportions. Each year we seem to get a little better and more organized. Next year we will have even more experience and know about the "special passes" for the band and other participants. My appologies to the ones I made walk from General Parking.
One person asked the question if this made us glorified parking lot attendents. The response was, "No we are not glorified." The names on the grave stones are the ones that are glorified.
Ed "WeScoot2" of the PGR had the honor of raising the flag to full staff at Noon.
It was my honor to stand with my fellow PGR members and assist family members of fallen heros to get to the cermony safely. Hope to see eveyone again next year.

| Yeah Scoot...count me in as well for next year. For the most part I was pretty prepared for all weather situations, rain coat, pants, umbrella, gloves and tow straps incase someone got stuck in the mud...yeah pretty much everything. EVERYTHING BUT SUNSCREEN!!! Now suffering from lobster-itis! I will definately remember sun screen for next year! |
