The staging for the 163rd's Welcome Home to Evansville is unchanged. There are a few things, however, that would be helpful for you to know before you get to the staging.
Our motorcycles will lead the troops and our cages will follow the troops. When we arrive at the armory, the motorcycles leading the parade will pull into the field to the east of the armory and most vehicles behind the troops, including our cages, will be diverted into the stadium parking lot. If you're in a cage, be sure to listen at the pre-ride briefing for tips on where to park if you want to go to the armory, arrangments have been made for you to get there.
Cages should have an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper on the dashboard with "Patriot Guard Riders" printed across it.
Bikes, don't forget to bring a kickstand pad!
Flags and Welcome Home banners are encouraged! This parking lot could be very crowded by 9:30 or so, please try to be there by 9AM so we can get lined up together as a group.
This is a plan in motion so last minute changes are possible.
See ya @ 9AM CENTRAL time, Sunday Nov 23rd, TriState Aero parking lot (between TriState Aero and Whirlpool Corp), East side of Hwy 41 North, Evansville, IN

Sr R/C IN Patriot Guard Riders | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 163rd is expected to arrive in Evansville on Sunday (Nov 23) ABOUT 10 AM. The time of arrival is just an estimate and the actual arrival time could be different either way. They will arrive from Camp Atterbury at the old airport parking lot. The old airport parking lot is on Hwy 41 North between Whirlpool and TriState Aero on the East side of Hwy 41. The troops will then be escorted to the armory on Division St. for dismissal.
OUR PLAN: We will set about 75 US flags on stakes at the armory at 7:30AM. We don't need everybody there for the flag detail but if you can help, it sure would be appreciated. We will meet near the entrance into the armory parking lot at 7:30AM.
Staging for the escort will need to begin at 9AM in the old airport parking lot on Hwy 41N (East side of Hwy 41N, between Whirlpool and TriState Aero).
We have a Patriot Guard Riders flag (3X5) that will be presented to the 163rd in Feb at a formal Welcome Home sponsored by the City of Evansville. The Gov, Lt Gov, Gen Umbarger and many other civic/military leaders have already signed this flag and we want you to sign it also. If you want to think of an appropriate one liner "Thank You" to put with your signature, now you've got time to think of something.
The pre-ride meeting will begin about 45 min before the troops arrive. We will get word when they are leaving Camp Atterbury and we will get updates as they travel.
The escort is going to involve several groups and individuals besides us, The 9AM staging will allow us to line up as a unit, get the PGR flag signed and have the pre-ride meeting which will include final details. This also allows for an early arrival of the 163rd --- these guys/gals just might be in a hurry!!
When the escort gets to the armory, you have the choice to stay and greet the troops in person or you can continue East on Division St to exit the escort. If you want to stay and you're on a bike, bring a kickstand pad -- we'll be parking in the grass East of the armory.
The thought of meeting them en route on the interstate is being discouraged for safety reasons. Also, with all the people involved, the Welcome Home will be much more impressive with some organization and that will take place in the old airport parking lot.
Hope you can be there!! ALL TIMES LISTED ARE CENTRAL TIME
Ride Captains for this are Pete Smith, Rick Williams, Lisa Lashbrook, Lloyd Davis and Joe Cobb.
Respects, Joe Cobb Sr RC IN patriot Guard Riders inpatriotguard@gmail.com

| homecoming was AWESOME! Thanks to all who were able to participate!
I'd estimate nearly 200 motorcycles leading the soldiers to the armory.
It took 11 firetrucks to hold all the soldiers and parade them thru town.
WooHoo!!!

IN Army National Guard 1-163 FA Welcome Home
OIF 2008
Mission Accomplished
As the sun came out around 0700 on November 23, 2008, we knew we were going to have an OUTSTANDING day, albeit starting with a bit nippy 21°. After thawing, we warmed up quickly as Roy, Bob, Mike, Joe, Lisa, Lloyd, and Pete created a static flag line with 70 flags lining the road in front of the Armory. Lisa (Lashbrook) was already in touch with her son, Spc. Stephen Lashbrook, one of over 300 returning soldiers with the news they were on the road from Attebury---leading home after 11 long months, 9 of them in the Sandbox. Finishing in short order thanks to the all the helpful souls that came, we moved on to the staging area on Highway 41 to stake out territory for the staging scheduled for 0900.
More bikes and cages started arriving around 0830 and continued to swell the group up till the briefing. We had to make a slight adjustment to our area to accommodate entry of the large vehicles (busses and fire trucks) once we learned their intended pathway. Lisa and Stephen kept in touch so we could update the ETA in order to do the briefing in plenty of time. Time dragged on or passed quickly, depending on your role; either as an expectant parent or someone trying to herd all the cats in the staging area. But all had things to do, socialize, greet old riding buddies, get some American Red Cross coffee or hot chocolate, scarf some G I Joe take the long stroll to the pit stop areas, check out the great wheels of the Mustang Car Club members, marvel at the 10 Ladder trucks from the Evansville Fire Department and those from surrounding community Fire Departments, or sign the PGR flag with well wishes and Thank Yous.
About 40 minutes prior to the ETA, the riders were gathered for the briefing. Instructions were given on the objective, the route, the priority order for the lineup for the parade, questions answered, and closed with a fitting blessing from Rick Williams. We got lined up in “order” and waited. The number of bikes in the corral was estimated at 170-200. The carbureted bikes started up ~ 10 minutes prior to the ETA (Temperature had risen to about 38°). The convoy of busses picked up an LEO escort along I64 close to Evansville to bring them down Highway 41 to the staging area (probably so they wouldn’t travel at and unsafe speed to arrive as soon as they wanted to.) With the LEOs in sight, the rest of the bikes fired up to give a roaring welcome!
The busses pulled in, debarked their warriors who filled the tops of the fire trucks, and we rolled out, all in about 20 minutes. The 163rd (SSgt. Worthington, the head cat herder who had more than any of us did making ALL the arrangements) had given us the honor of leading the parade to the Armory. Led by Sr. Ride Captain Joe Cobb and proud Moms Lisa Lashbrook and Carolyn Williams (son, Spc. Justin Williams), and a couple of other family members of the 163rd (whom this author regrets and apologizes for not getting their names), followed by the bikes of Gold Star Mom Peggy Jo Hammond and husband Jeff, then other Blue Star family members, a sizeable (about 30) contingent of the Blue Knights, and the rest of us, including American Legion Post 44 and 84 Riders, Rolling Thunder Chapter 6, the HOG Club, The GoldWing Club, with PGR riders interspersed throughout we started down Highway 41. The on duty LEOs from the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department, and Indiana State Police and some pumpers from EFD did a superb job on the entire route which also included the Lloyd Expressway (two of the heaviest traveled NS and EW roads in town) escorting and controlling the intersections and ensuring the safety of all.
We stopped briefly to allow the gap created by the pumped riders and the lumbering fire trucks to close then we were on our way. With the Blackhawk (which delivered BGen. Washburn for the ceremony and had come to the airport for fuel) hovering along and following the parade route from above, we proceeded to the Armory—about 12 miles away. Along the entire route, members of the community of all ages lined both sides of the road with Flags, banners, and noisemakers expressing their sentiments—pure joy and Thanks. We proceeded off the Lloyd through the short chute under a HUGE American Flag held aloft by one of Industrial Contractors’ biggest cranes to the Armory. Even after encountering a logistics SNAFU at the Armory on the path of the bikes (which went unnoticed by most observers), we got them safely to their destination and the bikes parked—somewhat close. The soldiers formed up for “brief” welcoming remarks from Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel and 8th District Congressman Brad Ellsworth, then were DISMISSED to their loved ones. Mission Accomplished!
Respectfully,
Joe Cobb, Lloyd Davis, Lisa Lashbrook, Rick Williams, and Pete Smith

| I want to especially thank Pete Smith for doing so much of this for the 163rd FA's welcome Home. Pete spent countless hours -- no, days -- coordinating the PGR role in this welcome Home. Pete was in daily, often face to face contact with SSGT Worthington and/or the Evansville Police Dept and other civic leaders for weeks in the planning of this mission. Pete, you've raised the bar for the defination of a sucessful mission! On behalf of everybody involved, Thank You! |

To All, "No man is an island, no man stands alone." (J.Donne) Without the help of SSGT Worthington, all the Ride Captains, and focus by all the participants, this would not have been the success it was. My thanks go to all of you for providing a part of the acknowledgement and celebration that all of these warriors deserve. And remember what Tom Hanks has asked us all--"what about next week?"
