21 Jul 2008 6:12 PM Alert

Warren P. Rodenberg's family has requested our presence during the visitation and services for their loved one who served his Country proudly in WWII.  Sgt Warren Rodenberg (Rody) swam ashore at Omaha Beach and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart among other awards during combat.  He served his country proudly and we want to show our appreciation to him for his service.

VISITATION will be held at Alexander Funeral Home Tuesday 22 July '08 from Noon until 8PM (Central)
SERVICES will begin at 10AM at the same Funeral Home on Wednesday 23 July '08 with an escorted procession to the cemetery which will be less than 5 miles.

STAGING both days will be at Alexander Funeral Home, West chapel, 2100 West Illinois St, Evansville, IN 47712.  We need to park in the parking lot to the North of the funeral home.

TUESDAY, We will hold a flag line during the visitation, please plan to get there when you can and stay as long as your schedule permits. The flag line will begin at 11AM so that we will be in place as SGT Rodenberg's family arrives.
    .
WEDNESDAY,  Stage at 8:45 AM in the parking lot to the north of the funeral home.  Large flags displayed on bikes or cars are not necessary but sure are a nice touch!  There will be no highway speeds during the procession to the cemetery. The service and escort should be over by 12:30PM

All Times shown are CENTRAL TIME
Bring your own water and dress for hot weather both days, we'll hold a small flag line and take shifts working it, due to the high temps.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Warren P. Rodenberg, WWII Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is one of America's Heroes that will NEVER be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Warren.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

FINAL MISSION REPORT:

Though the PGR turnout was light for the visitation, the Flags staked along the front of the funeral home gave definite notice of and paid fitting tribute to Warren P. “Rody” Rodenberg, SGT. US Army , WW II, the Hero resting inside. With the Flags flying again yesterday, after funeral services an escort of 9 PGR bikes accompanied “Rody” to his final resting place. Military Honors for this recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart from combat on Omaha Beach were rendered by VFW Post 6576 of which he was a life member. True to his fellow members of The Greatest Generation, “Rody” and his wife of just shy of 59 years Velma raised a fine family and gave openly of his time and mechanical talents, especially fixing bicycles for neighborhood kids whenever needed. As another of this group whose numbers diminish each day leaves us behind, let us always remember the forge of their childhood gave them the ability to handle the extraordinary feats they accomplished not only during their years of service but in their lifetimes thereafter. They have left us an incomparable legacy.
Respectfully,
Pete smith & Rick Williams
