This Mission is a Go.

Mission Order: To support and honor the Soldiers coming home of the 237th Engineer Company (Sapper Unit), US Army National Guard out of West Point, VA. Ed reminds us that “this unit if everyone remembers had few KIA's and casualties in the State of Virginia that the PGR conducted honor missions for. KIA-Spc. David E. Lambert and Spc. Derek R. Banks , Wounded-Sgt. James A. Corbett , Spc. Joshua G. Primm, and Pfc. Eric T. Holt.

Now the 237th is coming home, a lot of excitement and also some somberness in that some of their fellow troops came home early. The Family Readiness Group as a whole were there for the previous missions and wants the PGR there again this time”.

The PGR have again been request to meet the 237th at the Richmond International Airport and escort them home to West Point.  This will be a joint mission shared by the 4, 5 and 6 Districts of the Virginia PGR. It will be a two phase mission. One- meeting and coordinating a welcome at Richmond International and prepare to escort. Two - Escort buses with the Soldiers of the 237th to West Point, VA.

Phase I – Time of Arrival of the unit at the Airport  is 16:15  This will be an Escort Mission to West Point VA.  Approximately 30 miles down I-64.  We will have State Police escort.

Staging Time:  Aviation Museum to 1500 or earlier.

Directions:

The Virginia Aviation Museum is located at the Richmond International Airport at 5701 Huntsman Road near Sandston, Virginia. From Interstate 64 take Exit 197A (the Richmond International Airport (RIC) exit) and follow the brown Virginia Aviation Museum signs. Rally Point  Will organize at the staging area for final Rally and departure.

Phase II – Escort Buses with Soldiers of the 237th Sapper Unit to West Point, Va. PGRs of the 4.5 and 6 Districts along with the 1st Div. Richmond Motorcycle Highway Patrol will escort the Soldiers of the 237th to a Welcome Home Ceremony in West Point, VA. While soldiers are unloading the buses, the PGR will park and split in half and one contingent will form a Flag line in the vicinity of where the soldiers will be marching into the Foot Ball field.

The other half will work there way to the area in the bleachers and form a Flag line in the area where the family will be waiting for the soldiers after the formation. Once all soldiers have marched through the Flag line at the entrance to the Football field, that contingent of the PGRs will join the rest of the PGRs at the Bleachers. Welcome Home Ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

Provisions:

  • The ride formation will adhere to the provisions of the PGR Hampton Roads/District Five Standing Order. 2 to 3 second intervals for motorcycles in a staggering rice formation. 4-wheeled vehicles (car, trucks, etc.) will follow the Buses and one (1) motorcycle will provide Tail Gunner (Sweeper) position. No PGR riders will depart before the Ride Captain gives the signal to “roll”. Vehicles (“cages”) will fall behind the Buses.

This mission was so cathartic, I almost didn't mind the bumper to bumper traffic coming home. As many of you remember, we started meeting these guys and their families in reverse order, with Thanksgiving weekend have been spent with BAM's wonderful family.

I actually met and spoke with a good friend of BAM's as we were departing. We shared a few words, and he was grateful.

My son and I were so happy to see the remainder of this unit home, safe and sound, and not requiring our services at another funeral. They were hit hard, and many of us grieved with them. Those they lost will never be forgotten.

237th Sapper Unit, United States Army National Guard - Virginia

Ricmond to West Point, VA – 20 July 2008

(Welcome home West Point VA)

Escort and Welcome Home Mission to honor the Soldiers coming home of the 237th Engineer Company (Sapper Unit), US Army National Guard out of West Point, VA., escorting them home from Richmond International Airport on 20 July 2008.

Mission Summary:

On 10 July 08, Hamilton Gills contacted Sr. Ride Captain of District 5/Hampton Rds - Virginia Asst. State  Patriot Guard Riders , Woody “Rust Picker” Wagner. He stated, that he was asked by the Family Readiness Group Organizer of the 237th Sapper Unit (Rosa Pratt)to see if the PGR would support this Escort and Welcome Home Mission for this unit. A Mission Order was wrote and posted in the Patriot Guard Rider National Web site’s Home Front / Welcome Home Mission Forum topic area on 17 July 08.

Mission Execution:

Made contact with Rosa Pratt, and received the agenda for the Welcome home ceremony that would be held in West Point, VA. She provided me with the State Trooper who would be in charge of the escort. I called SGT Blankenship and made coordination and gave my information. This would be a mission that would involve three Districts, 4th, 5th and 6th Districts of the PGRs in VA. Bruce Briggs, Sr Ride CPT of 4 District would be in charge of the coordination at the Richmond Airport and we (5th Dist.) would coordinate the arrival at West Point and the Welcome Home ceremony. Other contacts made were with the 192nd Air National Guard, CPT Otto and SFC Jackson of the 237th, who kept us updated on the arrival of the unit at the airport. Tim “Road Trip” Fortune assisted me as Co-Ride CPT and made sure that everyone signed the Ride Roll Call sheet and get Release of Liability forms from new members.

This mission consisted of two phases. One meeting the soldiers coming off the plane at the airport, and two escorting them home on the with the State Troopers and rolling them in to the Welcome Home Ceremony at West Point H.S. VA.

The 5TH District rallied at the Home Depot parking lot at 1:15(pm) with 14 bikes and two cages. There we were joined by our 5th District Sr. Ride CPT Woody Wagner. We departed appox. 1:45(pm) and depart for Richmond. We stopped at the WaWaa right out side of Richmond Airport for a short break where we were called by SGT Jackson the original arrival time of 4:16(pm) had been moved up to 3:45(pm). There we were met by another biker which brought bike total to 15 bikes and 2 cages.

Phase I: Bruce had staged at Aero Airline with 7 bikes. We joined them and rolled over to Million Dollar Airlines and were able to park the bikes on the tarmac close to where the Airplane landed and the soldier unloaded. A flag line was formed in the path of where the soldiers walked to the buses. The smiles on they’re faces made all the work worthwhile. Bruce and Woody worked out the details out with the State Troopers and we were broken up into two bike groups. Half(11)bikes in front of the buses and the other half behind the buses. Tim “Road Trip” took charge of the back half of the bikes.

Phase II: We departed the Airport with full escort and arrived at West Point H.S. with no incidents. Along the way as we arrived at West Point, we were received by what seemed to be the whole town. There signs along the way welcoming the soldiers and as we road under our American Flag that was held up about 100 feet by an Latter Fire Truck it was evident that our mission was complete. We parked and moved inside the High School Gym where we were received by the families and friends of the soldiers. Gov. Tim Cain was present and joined in to welcome the soldiers too.

Conclusion:

A successful mission complete. Patriot Guard Riders thank Hampton Gill, Rosa Pratt and the entire family of the 237th Engineer Co. (Sapper Unit)for allowing us the honor to participate in this Very Well Deserved Welcome Home Mission. And we would also like to acknowledge CSM Steiner, Martin for his kind words below:

*********************************************************

Bruce & Papi Jay,
Thanks for the support, and thank you for all you do.  I know these Soldiers are glad to be home, and believe me, they really see the impact they have back at home when a group like the Patriot Guard Riders is there, en mass, to escort them to their families.

I am so appreciative of the support of PGR each time you perform these missions, and unfortunately the escorts for those we've lost. Nevertheless, PGR is always there.

Bruce, every time I get to speak before a captive audience and talk about the great things our Soldiers are doing and the support they receive at home, I always mention you specifically and the Patriot Guard Riders.  I can't speak highly enough of what you guys and gals do, you are the best.

Take care,
Martin
