Deputy William Howell Jr. Orangeburg, SC, 10May08

It is with a heavy heart that I post this Mission.

The Patriot Guard has the privilege of being invited to stand in Honor of Sheriff’s Deputy William Howell Jr. this Saturday, 10May08.

Orangeburg County Deputy William Howell Jr., 46, of Cross, was shot and killed at 1:30 a.m. Saturday on a front porch while responding to a domestic violence call in the Holly Hill area.

The murder suspect, Derrick Buras, was out of jail on bond on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. Buras was found dead in a ditch about a mile from the scene, hit and killed by a car as he tried to leave the scene. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.

Deputy Howell served the Low Country of South Carolina as a jailer at the Berkeley County, with the Moncks Corner Police Department, the S.C. Department of Corrections; the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office in the court, and in the Jamestown Police Department. As you can see, he loved Law Enforcement, and was proud to be an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Berkeley County Sheriff Department Captain Barry Currie said that Deputy Howell was just always a good guy and wanted to help everybody, and that the reason Howell held so many jobs was that he was looking for the best way he could serve. He also stated that Deputy Howell really loved his job and said it was all he ever wanted to do, he was a hard-working, dedicated man, and that he was all about helping people.

Deputy Howell is married and leaves behind his wife three children. He was an organist in his church and played for several slain officers' funerals.

Please make plans to stand in Honor of Deputy Howell, and show his Family, Friends, and fellow Officers how much we care about him and the job that he did. Let everyone know that we stand behind our Law Enforcement Officers in the job they do-protecting us, and that we will not forget. Prepare to “Listen to the Rumble.”

Staging Area Times/Location/Details TBA

The family and friends of Deputy Howell, and the Orangeburg area law enforcement community, all have my deepest sympathy. Deputy Howell has my enduring respect and gratitude for his service to his community, and for his dedication to attending to the safety and welfare of others. My prayer for everyone experiencing this loss will be that they find peace and comfort in his memory, and in knowing that for some reason not yet understood God has called Deputy Howell to a very special detail.

"To Serve and Protect" at any cost. Deputy Howell did just that and paid the ultimate price for it. The Bible says "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for another."
I heard something once that went - The Lord helps those who help themselves; to which I added, and to those who aren't able he sends someone who is. Deputy Howell was that person who could.

I offer my deepest sympathies to Mrs. Howell, the children and to his relatives and friends.

"... I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the alter of Freedom."

Yours, Very Sincerely and Respectfully,

We salute you , My Friend

Final Inspection

The officer stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,officer.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,officer
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."
