01 Oct 2008 9:18 AM Alert

Updated 6 Oct 08 1825 edt S Sturgis

Staging instructions for the escort mission on Tuesday, 7 October (Phase 1) are firm, as previously posted.

Staging instructions for the funeral service on Wednesday, 8 October (Phase 2) are as follows:

Anyone desiring to meet in the Charleston area and ride up together, can assemble in the parking lot of Hardings Restaurant, just off the Mink Shoals exit of I79 (exit 1). Please be there by 0800, as we will pull out shortly after that time. Those coming from the north can meet us at the Go-Mart near Clay, WV around 0900. It is located at the intersection of Route 16 and Route 4, and you cannot miss it; we will depart the Go-Mart at 0920 for the short ride to Clay County High School. Everyone needs to be at the school by 0930, for the mission brief at 0945. Our flag line needs to be in place by 1000.

The weather for Tuesday promises to be sunny and beautiful with a high of 72 degrees. There is a chance of evening showers on Wednesday, so it looks like we should have dry weather in the morning/afternoon for the funeral service, as well.

The Patriot Guard Riders will be providing escort from the airport, to Clay, WVthis phase of the mission is now scheduled for Tuesday morning, 7 October 2008. Initial staging will take place at the 7-Eleven store on Washington Street, adjacent to the capitol. Take exit 99 off I64 (Greenbrier Street), turn down the hill towards the capitol and 7-Eleven will be on your right. http://tinyurl.com/3q5atg

Staging time is 10:45 am, and we will pull out at 11:05; the airport is only a few minutes away. Please be fueled up and ready to go at 11:05, and please remember to bring your 3x5 flags.

Jamie will arrive at the Executive Air terminal in Charleston; those familiar with the airport are free to just meet us there by 11:15.  After plane-side honors have been completed, the PGR and law enforcement officials will provide escort to Clay, WV. The roundtrip between Charleston and Clay will last approximately 3 hours.

The location of the funeral service is the Clay County High School, located at 1 Panther Drive, Clay, WV 25043 Phone: (304) 587-4226. The school is located one mile south of Clay, WV, on Route 16.

According to information provided by Buddy Palla (ASC-South / RC), access to the cemetery will require transit on a well-groomed dirt road through the woods, of about .3 of a mile, in order to reach the grave site.  He rode into the cemetery this evening to ensure motorcycle navigation would not be an issue. Parking will be on an earthen surface, so kickstand plates will be necessary.
Please continue to monitor this thread for final staging instructions, to include locations and times.

This is now a Confirmed Mission

The family of SFC Nicholas as graciously accepted Patriot Guard Riders offer to stand in Honor and Respect for Jamie.

Although not yet known if our participation in his return to West Virginia will be requested, it is anticipated that he will arrive in Charleston on Monday, 6 October.  Please continue monitoring this thread for any information pertaining to this portion of the mission.

Services will be held at 1100 on Wednesday, 8 October, at the Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home, 154 Main St., Clay, WV 25043 (304) 587-4244 (http://tinyurl.com/3q5atg) with interment to follow in a local family cemetery.

According to information provided by the CAO, access to the cemetery by motorcycle COULD be extremely difficult and may require a walk of about .3 of a mile to reach the grave site.  WV ASC-South, Buddy Palla, will scout the location to ascertain our best and safest course of action.

I would ask ALL who are able to please look within yourselves to make every possible effort to participate in this most honorable mission to give your final salute to another of our own who has paid the ultimate price for YOUR freedom.

Please continue to monitor this thread for any information regarding Jamie's return to WV as well as staging/itinerary.
Respects,
Joe

A Special Forces soldier from Clay County, West Virginia has paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, while engaged in combat action in Afghanistan.

32 year old Army Sergeant First Class Jamie Nicholas was tragically killed by a roadside bomb that destroyed his Humvee. The blast also killed two other soldiers. The Clay County native was on his second combat tour in Afghanistan--doing what his family said he felt he needed to do.

The WV-PGR is currently awaiting contact from the assigned Army Casualty Assistance Officer; we are standing by, in order to provide this fallen hero with the honor he deserves. Please monitor this thread for further updates.

Many of our citizens will never know the sacrifices made by those who defend our freedoms, or the sacrifices made by their families and loved ones…as a veteran, I know. The Ballad of the Green Beret

Fighting soldiers from the sky,
Fearless men, Who jump and die.
Men who mean, Just what they say.
The brave men, Of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest,
These are men, America's best.
One Hundred men Will test today,
But only three, Win the Green Beret.

Trained to live off nature's land,
Trained in combat, hand to hand.
Men who fight by night and day,
Courage pique, From the Green Beret.

Silver wings Upon their chest,
These are men, America's best.
One hundred men will test today,
But only three win the green beret

SF Creed

I am an American Special Forces soldier. A professional! I will do all that my nation requires of me. I am a volunteer, knowing well the hazards of my profession. I serve with the memory of those who have gone before me: Roger's Rangers, Francis Marion, Mosby's Rangers, the first Special Service Forces and Ranger Battalions of World War II, the Airborne Ranger Companies of Korea. I pledge to uphold the honor and integrity of all I am - in all I do.

I am a professional soldier. I will teach and fight wherever my nation requires. I will strive always, to excel in every art and artifice of war.

I know that I will be called upon to perform tasks in isolation, far from familiar faces and voices, with the help and guidance of my God.

I will keep my mind and body clean, alert and strong, for this is my debt to those who depend upon me.

I will not fail those with whom I serve.

I will not bring shame upon myself or the forces.

I will maintain myself, my arms, and my equipment in an immaculate state as befits a Special Forces soldier.

I will never surrender though I be the last. If I am taken, I pray that I may have the strength to spit upon my enemy.

My goal is to succeed in any mission - and live to succeed again.

I am a member of my nation's chosen soldiery. God grant that I may not be found wanting, that I will not fail this sacred trust.
