SGT Proctor Robert Bright, WWII, Saturday 26JUL08, Ridgeland, SC

The Patriot Guard has been requested to stand in Honor of the life of SGT Proctor Robert Bright on Saturday 26JUL08, in Ridgeland, SC, by his Daughter, Mary.

SGT Bright served from 1944 to 1946 in General George Patton's Third Army in the European push and later on the the Phillipine Liberation. SGT Bright, among other decorations, was awarded the Bronze Star.

As you read his obituary below, it will become obvious what kind of man SGT Bright was. He was a Patriot, he was a servant of his fellow man, and a dedicated volunteer in service of his Country both in Combat and thereafter. His efforts appear endless and tireless. I'm amazed at what he accomplished during his short walk here on earth.

Written by his daughter, Mary:

"Proctor R. Bright's career has spanned from a shop boy, joining the Army and receiving the Bronze Star in tours in the Philippine and Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns, to owning one of the oldest African-American businesses in South Carolina and currently was a published author.

He was a master mechanic with a dedicated passion for his work.  An expert carpenter, he designed and built several houses and his garage. He was an accomplished guitarist/pianist and plays regularly for his church, and the local nursing home.  He serves the office of deacon, and was a choir member.He was a certified florist, and has taught specialized classes in shop mechanics and welding for Jasper High School.

He has served several terms on the Jasper County Live Oak Hospital and Tax Assesso’s boards.  Mr. Bright was a Sunday School teacher for many years and organized several programs in various churches. The community's need also provided an opportunity to serve as a 4-H volunteer leader assisting many functions in Rock Eagle, GA, and Clemson, SC.

He was honored as Grand Marshall of the Dr. Martin Luther King Day Parade in Ridgeland, South Carolina, his hometown. He was privileged in 2002, to be recognized as his family’s patriarch.  As an eloquent elder statesman he has had a voice in many crucial issues regarding the people of his city and state. A friend to ecology, he currently serves on the South Carolina Forestry Commission Board.

In 2007, Mr. Bright was favored by his beloved state to become a Palmetto Patriot, in honor of his service and was privileged to have March 29th proclaimed as “Proctor Bright Day” in Ridgeland, S.C. for all time to come. Also in 2007, he co-founded He Whispered a Dream Foundation, Inc. a non-profit organization, designed to place resources and Christian literature with at-risk teens and seniors, our most vulnerable. In March of 2008, the Jasper County Caring Hands Foundation honored him with the Humanitarian of the Year Award, and he has recently been selected by the Lt. Governor of South Carolina’s Office on Aging as the recipient of the 2007 Media Award.

Mr. Bright, a humble man remained a loving and kind friend, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed travel, was an avid fisherman, loved story- telling, family gatherings and was an accomplished cook."

Quite an amazing man.

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

It is with great honor that I ride for this hero. I knew Sgt. Bright and had the utmost respect and admiration for this great hero and honored citizen of the state of South Carolina. Not only was he a hero who proudly served his country, but was a respected citizen of the town of Ridgeland, S.C. This quiet, gentle man was a fine father, a fine friend to all, and it was an honor to have known him if only for a little while.

May you Rest In Peace and I will stand tall for you.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Third Army captured processed a total of 1,280,688 POW's.

Third Army suffered 16,596 killed, 96,241 wounded, and 26,809 missing in action for

The Third Army

Artillery fired 5,870,843 rounds of ammunition.

Tank destroyers destroyed 648 enemy tanks, 211 SP guns, and 801 pillboxes.

2,186,792 tons of supplies were transported a total of 141,081,336 miles.

Repaired 99,114 GP vehicles, 21,761 combat vehicles, 11,613 artillery pieces, 125,084 small arms, and 32,740 instruments.

Engineers built 2,498 bridges, almost 50 of bridging, and built or maintained an average of 2,240 miles of road.

The decorations awarded to soldiers of the Third Army were:

Medal of Honor 19, Distinguished Service Medal 44,Distinguished Service Cross 291, Legion of Merit 159, Silver Star 4,990, Soldier’s Medal 247,Bronze Star 29,090

General George S. Patton’s words at leaving the Command:

General Truscott, Officers and Men:

All good things must come to an end. The best thing that has ever come to me thus far is the honor and privilege of having commanded the Third Army.

The great successes we have achieved together have been due primarily to the fighting heart of America , but without the coordinating and supply activities of the General and Special Staffs, even American valor would have been impotent. You officers and men here represent the fighting, the administrative and the supply elements of this Army. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your valor and devotion to duty, and my fervent gratitude for your unwavering loyalty.

When I said that all good things come to an end, I was referring to myself and not to you because you will find in General Truscott every characteristic which will inspire in you the same loyalty and devotion which you have so generously afforded me. A man of General Truscott's achievements needs no introduction. His deeds speak for themselves. I know that you will not fail him.

Goodbye and God bless you.

Of the soldiers of the Third Army, the Supreme Allied Commander commented, "Working and fighting together in a single indestructible partnership, you have achieved perfection in unification of air, ground, and naval power that will stand as a model in our time."

Prayer of General George S. Patton, Jr.

(France, December 1944)

Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend.
Grant us fair weather for Battle.
Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen.3
