"When the Army and the Navy look on Heaven's scene, They will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines" from the Marine Hymn
Condolences to the family and friends of 2d Lt. Ian McVey. It may seem a cruel irony that he should be killed on a motorcycle here in the States where he should be safe. The truth is that any of us could be killed anywhere, at any time. But the measure of a man is not where or how he died, but how he lived. Lt. McVey was a Marine. There can be no doubt that his life meant something fine. That is how he should, and will be, remembered. |

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
