It is oft times difficult to post notes of condolences to the familes of those we stand to honor.  That is made even more difficult when it involves someone who we knew, either direct or indirectly, as is the case here.

Terry, for your honored service in the uniform of our country and your continued service to your community as a volunteer firefighter, I thank and humbly salute you.  May God welcome you with open arms as you approach the Gates of Heaven.

Anna, Ashley, Jennifer, Shannon and all of Terry's family, friends and community:  May you find a measure of healing in God's comfort and mercy during this most difficult time in your lives.  May your loss be tempered, somewhat, by the knowledge that your husband and Father will continue to watch over you from his place among the Angels.

It will be our Honor and Duty to stand for another Veteran of America's Armed Forces.

May you rest in eternal peace Terry.  God Speed.
Respects,
Joe

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

***************MISSION ACCOMPLISHED****************

On a sunny but slightly crisp morning, WV ASC Ron Jones and I proceeded to the small town of Sistersville, WV to pay our Honor and Respect to U.S. Army Veteran and Volunteer Firefighter Terry Efaw of Paden City, WV, having no real knowledge of what our level of participation would be this day but knowing, as always, "it's the right thing to do".

Happily, shortly after arriving at the staging area, we were joined by two members of the PGR from Pennsylvania and, as our flag line was established, another member, also from PA, arrived to assist in this most honorable mission.  Gentlemen, for your willingness to travel great distances to assist us in the successful completion of this mission, I humbly salute and thank all of you.  Joining us in our flag line, also, were two American Legion Riders from Post #67 in Sistersville, Russell Weekly and Brian Reed.  Brian, it must be noted, is currently a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces and just returned from the Sandbox two weeks ago.

Within minutes of establishing our flag line, Terry's wife, Anna, arrived at the funeral home.  Having worked with her for many years at PPG, offering my condolences to her was extremely difficult and emotional, for both of us, but she expressed her sincere and honest appreciation for our attendance this day.  At her request, I presented her with our plaque prior to her going inside.

We continued to maintain our flag line until the start of services at 1300, breaking away at that time to travel to Greenwood Cemetery to await the arrival of the procession for Terry's graveside services.  For me, personally, this was a very emotional time as Terry's final resting place is located less than 100 feet from where my own Mother rests.  I wish to thank Ron, again, for taking a few moments to pay his respects to her.  I can assure you that she appreciated that small gesture.  Thank you, Ron.

After approximately a 90 minute wait, the procession approached the cemetery, led by units of the Paden City Volunteer Fire Department, of which Terry was a member for 19 years.  Members of that FD, accompanied by members from Sistersville, New Martinsville and Moundsville Fire Departments, made their way up the small hill to stand in Honor and Respect for one of their own.

We maintained our flag line directly behind the grave site during a very emotional service for everyone.  Rifle honors and taps were rendered by members of VFW Post 6327 and American Legion Post 67 from Sistersville, WV.  I MUST say that of all the missions I've done, these honors and the words spoken by the VFW Chaplain were the best and most precise that I have witnessed.  My hat is off to, and I salute each of these Veterans from this Nation's storied past.

As those of us who have attended missions know all too well, with each one we generally take a little "something" with us, something that is indelibly etched in our minds forever.  No, Terry did not serve in any conflict nor was he stationed in any "hot zone", to the best of my knowledge, but the outpouring of support for this young Husband, Father, Brother and friend has little comparison.  This was very much in evidence as, when the graveside services were completed, over the radio speaker from one of the units of the Paden City Fire Department, an announcement was made by the EMS dispatcher, acknowledging that Firefighter Terry Efaw had answered the bell one last time.  That announcement, my friends, will stay in my mind forever.

May you rest in honored peace and serenity Terry.  A grateful nation and community salutes you for your honored service to both.  I know, beyond a doubt, that you continue to watch over your family, friends and community from your place in Heaven alongside those who have gone before you.  God Speed.
Respects,
Joe
